MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL
Every day we kick the "t" out of can't.
In this bewildering and surreal time, we are linked more strongly than ever in our care and commitment to the young people of Milford. In the midst of difficulty, we are finding direction and courage and a surprising rhythm within these odd days.
As this 7th week draws to a close, I thought it fitting to find ways to celebrate our students and our community. Thank you for supporting the work of our faculty and staff. The four weeks ahead of us will truly pass quickly and although I've camped in sleet in the third week in May, I am going to promise that sunny days are coming ~
You'll find tucked in this note much for our community to celebrate! Included here is an update on our student athletes, a note from Mrs. Z,; a spotlight on students and staff who are making a difference; drone happenings, and much more! I hope that this letter cheers your heart and renews your spirit!
We are the Spartans. We rise, we fight, we never give up.
Best always,
Principal Davis

Nora St. Onge writes about her experiences working in a retirement community during this time:
I am currently working at the Ledgewood Bay retirement community, as a receptionist. Working as a receptionist has its pros and cons but we have a job to do, so we get our work done. We are the first face people see when they walk through the front doors, which means that our first impression matters most. Before the lockdown, we had visitors everyday coming to see their family members and spend time with them, but now everything is different. Our first step of safety was keeping all visitors out of the building only to come in or drop something off if it is an emergency. The second step was keeping all visitors out no matter what, and keeping all our residents in the building at all times, and no more meals in the dining room all meals are brought up to residents rooms. And our current safety procedure is that every staff member wears goggles and a mask (picture provided) and all residents are asked to stay in their rooms and not to loiter in the lobby. Working with elderly comes with struggles, when we first started our safety procedures they are all very confused and a lot of family members were not happy. The first two weeks of lockdown were the hardest for everyone, family members called and complained about how they couldn't visit their family. Family members have called and asked when they can see their resident family members and when the quarantine would be over, all that we have been able to tell them is "We do not have an exact date in place and neither does the state, so we are in quarantine until further notice." All in all, this pandemic has not only stressed both the staff and the residents out but it has given us a chance to take time to ourselves and focus on the important things in life during this time.
MHS faculty and staff members are also using their time to benefit our communities. Sandy Lafleur, Tam Sodders, and Sue McNally have been busy making masks; Sandy Lafleur gathered pledges for each bag of roadside trash she gathered in order to raise money for Baby Steps, a charity that supports new mothers.

MHS Kaley Speech Contest Tradition Continues!
In remote learning, MHS juniors are busy in their English classes preparing research papers, the foundation for classroom speeches. Teachers have harnessed multiple tools for instruction: Google Classroom, screencasts, online virtual meetings and more to engage students in a meaningful experience.
This year’s contest will be held live Friday, May 22, 2020 via Zoom. Students who are in the final round will invite parents, guardians and friends to the audience to hear their speeches and root them on. “It is an important Milford tradition we are pleased technology can help us preserve. I am very grateful to the judges who will be giving almost a full day of their lives to the event,” said Jean Locicero Shankle, the English teacher who coordinates the contest.
The contest is an opportunity for students’ to express their well-researched positions on current, controversial issues. After formatting their arguments in formal, written standard English, they reformat the messages for listeners and deliver them in 3-5 minute speeches in their classrooms. The best 12 compete in the final Kaley speech contest, which is judged each year by business and professionals from a variety of fields. All members of the judging panel this year are experienced: two have been with the contest for over 10 years; two are alumnae who participated themselves as students; one is returning for a second year. Our judges are Ed Killam, Elise DeMichael, Chip Pollard, Catherine Flynn and Brittany Gentilhomme.
