Message from the Principal
Dear Mar Vista Academy Parents and Community
Mar Vista Academy Parents and Community,
I would like to begin by saying that I hope you are all staying safe and staying healthy. As we continue to see the situation evolve, we also continue to take the necessary steps to better serve the students and our school community.
As we shared three weeks ago, Governor Newsom and State Superintendent Thurmond recommended that all school sites remain closed for the remainder of the school year. As of now, the district office and school sites remain closed to the public. For the last two weeks, our teachers have been working on receiving Professional Development to be able to begin communication with our students in preparation for Distance Learning.
Please know that the California Department of Education developed guidelines for Distance Learning. Distance Learning means instruction in which the student and the instructor are in different locations. We know that the transition from in person/classroom learning to distance learning may be challenging so we will ensure there are a variety of supports in place for students and parents.
We are working hard on making sure to provide access for each student as we develop and refine our distance learning program. The goal of this plan is to continue, and not interrupt, your middle school education. Distance Learning will be delivered in digital (computer based) or non-digital (paper) depending on your child’s access; we are currently developing the best format that will meet your students’ academic needs.
Distance Learning instruction begins on April 20. We want to share the Guiding Principles that have informed our process, and three primary tasks for us to accomplish.
Guiding Principles:
- Flexibility in Implementation
- Grace for Yourself and Others
- Grade Improvement Only
- Asynchronous First
- Keep it Simple
- Use What You Know
- Consider Students Ease of Access
- Learn Collaboratively
Three Tasks for our teachers to accomplish prior to April 20:
- Connect with students and provide enrichment activities
- Choose tools and platforms for delivering content to students
- Organize content and resources in collaboration with colleagues
Mar Vista Academy family, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we go through this uncharted territory. We will continue to follow the guidance of public health experts and work with our district office to protect everyone as well as follow best practices related to COVID-19.
Again, thank you for your support.
With respect,
Mrs. Jaramillo
