SIEC Notes
Southern Indiana Education Center Fall 2016 Newsletter
Welcome Back!
These are busy and exciting times. The SIEC has been receiving and acting on valuable feedback from every level of educational leadership: our board of superintendents, elementary and secondary principal councils, curriculum council, elementary and secondary teacher advisory groups, and many networking sessions. We have schools going through the curriculum design process and just recently kicked-off our Master Teacher Series with secondary science educators. We have quite a variety of professional learning opportunities to offer and love hearing from you about your needs for your district/school/classroom. Let the staff here at the Southern Indiana Education Center know how we can help and support you.

SIEC Notes: Fall 2016
Indiana Region 4 Migrant Center News
Our migrant staff works diligently to serve our 16 county area. Connecting families and children to available resources, developing new opportunities for students and continuing to improve the educational experiences already in place keep our staff members busy. The SIEC website will soon contain an area with our migrant center information. Please let us know if additional items would be helpful for you once this area is added to the site.
Early Learning
We are very proud of the recognition from the state as a “Promising Practice” with our wrap-around preschool program that started last fall in Vincennes through collaboration with the TMC organization and continued this spring as our families began moving back into our area. Our preschoolers also participate in our school-site summer program during June and July.
Education for Students K-12
Our school-site summer program just concluded at Clark Middle School on July 27th after 7 1/2 weeks serving 109 students during this time period. We had an excellent, energetic staff this summer who worked each day with the students providing educational activities in reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic as well as many advanced lessons with science, social studies, health, career goals, and technology. Our summer program has evolved over these last three years and continues to be refined to best meet the needs of our students who attend.
Out-Of-School Youth
For the upper ages of our spectrum, we opened a Career Center in Oaktown this summer and now offer building trades classes for our out-of-school youth ages 18 through 21. This center will house automotive skills training as well. Our mobile classroom stays busy each week as well. Students work to improve their English skills in the evenings. We have classes for our older students here from Mexico to help them progress toward meeting requirements for diplomas at the middle school and high school levels in Mexico. These classes can be continued once they move back to Mexico this fall. The diplomas allow them to qualify for better jobs in Mexico. Over 35 students have participated in these programs this year. Starlab Scheduling
Would you like to study the night sky during the school day? The SIEC has three Starlab
portable planetariums available for loan to member schools. Starlab provides a unique learning environment for all grade levels on topics such as astronomy, mythology, geography, and more.
Each school that plans to use Starlab must have a teacher who has been trained in Starlab operations. Although schools that completed an online scheduling form last spring had first choice on scheduling times, you are still welcome to complete an online form and request possible dates by visiting https://goo.gl/VSRRl6 or call Amy at the SIEC at 812-482- 6641 to schedule. Starlab information has been emailed to principals in within the past week. Amy
