Exciting Programs and Updates
A message from the Head of School
Dear Campus Lab School Families,
I would like to begin with a sincere thank you to our community, parents, teachers and students. Thank you for honoring our travel requirements to decrease the level of risk for our community. Two weeks after spring break, we continue to enjoy in-person learning for all students. We believe this is a testament, not just to our efforts in the building, but also to the larger commitment of our families to the common good. Thank you for all of your persistent dedication to keeping our children and families safe during this this year. Due to our collective efforts, including guidance from our parent medical team and support from the University, we have experienced minimal disruptions to our in-person learning schedule this year with a total of 4 cases impacting our physical school community thus far. While we are prepared to make a quick pivot should we experience any cases in the next few weeks, I think it is fair to say our community exemplifies what it means to focus on the common good.
As Teacher Appreciation Week kicks off, it is also a perfect time to thank our teachers for all they do, daily, to teach, love and guide our students. It goes without saying this pandemic has been a challenge to us all. Our teachers have risen to the challenge, providing a safe and loving environment, focusing on social emotional learning and rigorous academics, both for those in-person and online. We have maintained focus on the high quality, inquiry based and hands-on learning experiences we value through deep dives with real world experts, STEAM activities, service-learning opportunities and book studies. It has been humbling to work with such a dynamic group of professionals, and I am grateful for our community every day!
Our students, too, have embraced this journey with big hearts, open minds and a resiliency that buoyed us all and reminded me this truly has NOT been a lost year but rather a year of growth and change for us all.
Our middle school students have experienced rich learning this year through competitive activities including our annual Robotics and Lit Festival programs. Our eighth graders were all accepted to their first-choice high schools and have demonstrated academic excellence in their placement tests for high school. For the first time, middle school participated in multiple programs offered to the Carlow University community including the monthly University Hour seminars where the entire campus community comes together to reflect on themes related to the Mercy Critical Concerns. There have been scooter shows, Rube Goldberg Machines and some kickball. This week, middle school wraps up their study of STAMPED From the Beginning with a student-parent book discussion.
Our Intermediate School will be showing off their Invention Convention creations in May as part of the Remake Learning Days. In addition, they traveled through the world as part of the National Geographic Out of Eden Walk, studied global water scarcity and made homemade ice cream!
Primary students have been hard at work. Second grade is studying Cinderella stories from around the world, discovering commonalities and differences in each cultural tale. First grade celebrated Pi Day, read several diverse books for Read Across America, and they currently learning about good stewardship of our Earth. And Kindergarten began a dinosaur dig, with our little paleontologists hard at work on an excavation site.
Along with First Holy Communion and our annual May Crowning on the horizon, our annual middle school musical is back! This, along with the return of some of our spring traditions and celebrations, makes it feel a lot more like our pre-pandemic School community.
A special thank you to the PTA for supporting some wonderful programming this year. The Ajna Dance Company will be hosting an Indian Dance workshop for our school community on Wednesday. Additionally, we have a parent program called Shape The Sky to discuss internet and social media safety this month.
This year our dynamic Artist in Residence program, with artist Sarah Zeffro has been such a wonderful experience. The Love is Colorful project will culminate with a gallery presentation in the Carlow University Art Gallery. Love IS Colorful and this experience has been a fabulous collaboration between Ms. Roche and Ms. Zeffro.
Additionally, we hope many of you have had an opportunity to participate in some of the parent series sessions we have held this year in collaboration with Wheeling Country Day School. Topics have included Executive Functioning and A Life Lived Upside Down: Surviving and Thriving with Dyslexia. Our next session, PHun with Phonology will showcase our very own Lee Sullivan! We hope you can join us on May 20 at 12:00 pm.
We are excited to announce two summer programming opportunities for rising 6-9th grade students! In collaboration with Carlow University, we will host a Youth Advocates in Mercy (YAMs) camp! Beginning June 14, students will have an opportunity to explore local government and the role advocacy groups play in raising awareness and bringing change to our communities. Reflective of our mission and vision, this program is an exciting opportunity for our young adolescent learners. Feel free to share with others outside our school community, as we welcome youth from across the region to join us. More information, including the registration link, can be found below.
With our strategic plan in place, new classroom technology, and robust summer programming, we are ready to launch into the next year! We are excited to have you by our side!
School Climate Surveys
If you have not taken the opportunity to participate yet, there is still time! As we strive to ensure that all schools provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, we want to learn more about your experiences as a parent or caretaker of a student at The Campus Laboratory School.
We invite all parents, guardians, and caretakers to complete the Pennsylvania School Climate Survey for Parents. As you respond to each survey item, please think about your own personal experiences as a parent, caregiver, or guardian at your child’s school. By participating in the survey, you will provide valuable insights that we can use to improve the climate and culture of our schools. We will use the survey results to develop strategies, procedures, and/or programs to enhance our school climate.
Thank you for your time, we hope you will support our effort to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
