Capitol Hill Headliner

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year Capitol Hill Families!

I am excited to be back after Winter Break and hope you all are doing well. This week our Headliner is focused on three topics:

  • VLS Enrollment
  • 3rd Grade and Middle School Materials Pickup Days
  • PTO Update
  • No School for Elementary Students January 25-29

On February 1 students in grades 1 and 2 will begin with their in-person or VLS classes. Students in grades 3-5 will remain with their current teacher until February 16. If we do have multi-age classes in-person that include students in 2nd and 3rd grade together, the 3rd graders would start with the 2nd graders in-person on February 1. As we know more information next week regarding the make-up of in-person and VLS classes we will share this ASAP.

I also wanted to share that we have two new staff members starting with us next week! Mr. Michael VandenHeuvel and Ms. Kathleen Opatz! Mr. VandenHeuvel will be taking over in Ms. Footh's 2nd grade class as she will be leaving Capitol Hill and will be moving. Ms. Opatz will be taking over Ms. Blumer's classroom as she will be retiring. Ms. Blumer has dedicated many years to Capitol Hill, the students, and families, and we wish her well with her retirement.

Deadline for Virtual Learning School Extended

Saint Paul Public Schools recently announced that elementary school students will be returning to full-time, in-person learning in February.

As we transition to in-person learning, families have an opportunity to choose their preferred learning model -- to continue with distance learning through the Virtual Learning School or move to full-time, in-person learning.

We understand this is a difficult decision for our families, and want to give people an extension to make this decision over the weekend.

Pre-K through 5th grade students, including students who receive special education services in those grades, who wish to stay in distance learning for the remainder of the school year are asked to enroll in the Virtual Learning School by 4 p.m., Monday, January 11, if they haven’t done so already.

Enrollment requests made by the deadline will be prioritized to keep students at their current schools and in their current programs. Enrollment requests for the Virtual Learning School received after that date will be processed and may result in a Virtual Learning School assignment in a different school.

To the extent possible, students may remain connected to their currently enrolled school. Depending on enrollment and staffing, there may be situations where Virtual Learning School students are in classes with students across the district.

Students may request to enroll from in-person learning to the Virtual Learning School at any time. SPPS will keep a wait list for families requesting in-person learning after the January 11 deadline. The wait list will be regularly monitored to determine if and when a transition is possible depending on the space available at your school.

No School for Elementary Students January 25-29

The Minnesota Safe Learning Plan requires that school districts use at least two school days for planning and building preparation when changing learning models. There will be no instruction on these days.

For SPPS, these transition days will be:

  • PreK-5, Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) and Federal IV Special Education programs: January 25-29. January 29 was a previously scheduled teacher professional development day, so there will be no instruction for elementary students that week.
  • Grades 6-12: To be determined

For more information, visit spps.org/reopen or refer to the SPPS calendar.
