Musing Minds 2015-2016

May 6, 2016

Highlights

Career Day was a success! I'm so proud of all our "professionals." No doubt they will accomplish many great things in the future.

We certainly enjoyed the time we spent playing the student-created math games. Art and Math and Creativity combined!

I am incredibly touched and humbled by the outpouring of support I received this week for Teacher Appreciation. Thank you all so very much!

Happenings

Field Day shirts are here, and the kids are excited. Now we just need volunteers! Field Day cannot occur without at least 10 volunteers for each grade level. Right now the 5th grade does not have enough. We need adults to help supervise groups of students, order the participants, record times, pass out ribbons, and manage equipment. If you are willing and able to help us out on May 19th, 12:30-2:00, please let contact me or Laura Morgan.

And while we're asking.....if you are willing and able to volunteer for the 5th Grade Picnic on the last day of school, 10:30-12:00, we'd love to have you. Come and help us to make our 5th graders' last day a great one! Again, contact me or Laura Morgan.

The great author and story teller, Carmen Agra Deedy, will visit Gwin Oaks for a performance on May 9th. Purchase forms for Deedy's books were sent home last week.

All students who have turned in 100% of their Reading Logs this year are invited to a special celebration on May 10th. Great job Gwin Oaks Readers!

Please sort through the Friday Folder papers. You'll find a printed notice about the 5th Grade Celebration on May 24th. I have also attached a digital file to the e-mail.

We will take the county-issued DA tests Monday-Thursday next week. Social Studies and Science are paper-pencil tests. Reading and Math are online. If your child misses a test, he or she will need to make it up. So please plan appointments accordingly. All of our tests will begin at 8:30. Thank you!

Tidbits

Research is beginning to show that the most successful people (in a professional sense) are often not those with the highest IQ, but those who are most creative. This article offers some suggestions to parents and educators on how to nurture creativity in our children.

Upcoming Learning

Reading:

Next week we continue work on our Poetry Project. We will learn about haiku, limericks, concrete poems, and bio-poems.

Writing:

Students are researching a historical figure. The research component is due Friday, but we will continue to develop the research into a project after that.

Math:

We take our final classroom test of the year on Tuesday. It is cumulative, so it covers all that we have learned this year. Beyond that we will continue to review and also preview 6th grade material.
