BREAKOUT EDU - AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO THE CLASSROOM
So, what is Breakout EDU? Puzzles are created for groups to decipher and these clues, leading to another, will unlock the box within a specific amount of time. There are several age ranges to choose from: early childhood, elementary, middle school, high school, even adult. With over 350 games, an educator has plenty of options to choose from that relate to every content area, grade level, and group size. However, it is up to educators to make it meaningful in our own classrooms. Breakout EDU is fun, adaptable and develops essential skills such as collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills. You could use Breakout Edu to launch a new unit, review a topic, build inquiry or critical thinking skills or work on team building. And, there's even a digital BreakoutEDU option available now to educators! Suggestions for getting started You will need a password to gain access into the game instruction. (Contact your TLC for the password.) Search through the various games and determine which one best fits your content or end goal. Watch the game video, create the clues/puzzles, change the lock combinations and lock up the box. Debrief/reflect on the learning activity with your students after they are finished. Breakout EDU has reflection cards as a tool for you to use. For more information about Breakout Edu, learn the different games and to purchase a kit visit https://www.breakoutedu.com/ If you are interested in implementing this in your classroom, we will ensure you have the materials and resources to get started! Let an admin or our TLC co teach alongside you!
SC Metric Week
Celebrating Metric Week in South Carolina 2017 (October 8-14) is a very important opportunity for K-12 students. Some easy-to-use ideas on celebrating Metric Week are available online at: www.artsandsciences.sc.edu/cse or http://scacademysci.org
As you know very well, companies (which will eventually employ many of our students) are gradually producing products to metric system standards. This means that the jobs of tomorrow will require employees to be able to use metric units.
The Metric System has become more prevalent in U.S. society, science and everyday life. For example, when referring to global warming, the CO2 emissions are measured in metric tons. Our U.S. military describes deployments in kilometers, and prominent sports such as track and field, cycling and the Olympics are all measured in metric. In healthcare, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, glucose measurements, prescription and over the counter medicines and dietary supplement dosages are all metric. Additionally, package labeling (especially beverages) express the contents in metric. U.S. consumers are becoming more familiar with grams and milligrams through information provided on mandatory nutritional labeling.
The South Carolina Metric Proclamation is distributed to all public and private schools in South Carolina and is recommended and approved by the South Carolina Academy of Science (SCAS), SC Council of Teachers of Mathematics and coordinated with the Office of Metric Programs at the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), part of the U.S Department of Commerce and the Center for Science Education at USC.
Special thanks go to Governor Henry McMaster for his support of this worthwhile endeavor.
