Summer Camp Fun (Week 2)
Our Best Summer Ever!
Important Reminders
Many classrooms are asking families to who may have extra sheets, blankets or clip clothespins to consider donating them to our “tent city” times in the afternoon. Children of all age groups have really enjoyed making tents around the room.
An important reminder for everyone – please remember to bring summer camp necessities: sunscreen, bug spray, extra clothes, and a water bottle! There are labels in each classroom to use to write your child’s name and date.
Remember; please be sure to leave all electronic devices at home. Our days are busy; we have very little time to use these devices. This will also minimize lost or broken items.
A Busy Week . . .
This week all of the age groups have been working on getting to know each other, learning the schedule and routine, finding their way around school and the classroom.
Art: This week Merge Art Center came to OELC. We used different color paint and brushes to strip the paper. This will become part of next week’s art activity.
Theater: Mr. Gray from the middle school came to OELC. We played games that introduced pantomiming.
Cooking: Ms. Kelly Lee leads cooking each week. We learned about My Plate. We made breakfast banana splits; made with yogurt, not ice cream.
Lego Club: During LEGO club, we created mini-fig., wish lists and began collecting LEGOs that we needed to build them
Science: This week we are learning about Ecosystems. On Thursday, we took a nature walk. We took pictures of the habitats we saw along the Polly Ann Trail and used materials to create a Diorama.
Book Club: We did puzzles and enjoyed read aloud books. Teachers introduced everyone to journals.
Minute to Win It: This week, we used chopsticks to pick up Kix and rolled dice until we got the right numbers, played Human Scavenger Hunt and many more. These were a great success!
TLC: These are gym and outdoor games that work on cooperation, team building, leadership, communication, and understanding interpersonal skills. This week groups created a Zoo, and played Shark and Minnow and Predator and Prey games.
Horticulture: The 1st – 2nd grade group planted a vegetable garden in the OE Courtyard, and other groups planted seeds in their classrooms!
All of this, and not to mention everything else happening in the classrooms and on the playgrounds!

Community Projects
As part of their summer camp experience the 3 through 6 graders are working on community learning and service projects. There will be three projects this summer. Students have been learning to work together to make signs for the activity, gather the materials, develop a work plan and come to an agreement about where the will donate any money that they raise.
The first event is a car wash! The car wash will take place in the OELC parking lot from 11am until 1pm. Donations are welcome. Children are working as a group to decide where to donate any proceeds.
This group will be holding a bake sale and a garage sale later this summer.

Ideas For Home
Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt!
Take some time this weekend to explore the outdoors and go on your own nature walk! Go to the park, on a nearby hiking trail, or even in your own backyard. To make it even more fun, make a list of animals, plants, and other sights you might see on your walk. Maybe a bird’s nest or a lily pad! A squirrel or a deer! Put all these on a list and when you and your children find them, mark it off your list!
