STAAR Testing This Week
Our ninth grade students will be taking their Biology and Algebra I STAAR End of Course Exams this week. Juniors will be taking their US History STAAR End of Course Exam. These Exams are a state graduation requirement so it is important that we encourage them to do their best. They have worked hard all year long and their teachers have prepared them well so now they just need to be reminded that they have what it takes to be successful!
Any test can create anxiety and stress but high stakes testing that lasts 4 hours can really turn up the pressure. Practical steps that can help relieve stress on the day of the test are get enough sleep, eat a hearty breakfast, come prepared, be on time, and practice some relaxation techniques like deep-breathing, positive self-talk, or visualization. This week all 9th grade students will take the STAAR Biology EOC on Monday, May 6 as well as their Algebra I EOC on Wednesday, May 8. 11th grade students will take the STAAR US History EOC on Tuesday, May 7. All three of these tests are 4 hours long. Please talk with your child about their test and help them work through any anxiety they may be feeling. They have worked hard all year long and have been well prepared for the test. Now they need to believe in themselves and understand that if they believe that they can, they are already half way there.
All other students will be on a regular schedule this week. Some classes have been relocated due to the classrooms needed for testing. Testing room assignments and classes being relocated have been posted throughout the building.

Just as with STAAR, students taking AP tests need to be reminded that they have what it takes to be successful. These next two weeks are full of testing STAAR and AP for our students so please help your student know if and when they are testing. We do our best to continue school as usual for all other students but due to the complexity of moving classes around to accommodate the space needed for testing please understand that it may take a little longer to locate non-testing students. You can help us in this area by keeping all deliveries and appointments to a minimum during this time. Thanks in advance for your understanding!
Lobos of the Year Honored
LEHS Teacher of the Year 2019 - Mrs. Vericker
While Mrs Jessi Vericker has been voted the 2019 Teacher of the Year, she really is a teacher that could receive this distinction every year. Mrs. Vericker cares about her students not just what her students should learn. She has pioneered restorative practices in her classroom, giving students a safe place to share with each other the things that are on their mind. The circle time she facilitates is something students look forward to and it creates an environment where students want to learn. Mrs. Vericker puts students first in all that she does. Whether she takes on another course to teach because students need someone or she plans her own medical appointment around what is best for her class schedule, Mrs. Vericker will go to extraordinary lengths to do what is best for her students. She has been known to walk a struggling student to other classes to make sure they know she cares enough to hold them accountable. She works with students who need a different setting in Evening Academy ,Summer School, and Homebound. If there is a LEHS student who needs her help, she will find a way to be there for them. It is through all of these selfless actions that Mrs. Vericker has quickly become a teacher that students, parents, and colleagues respect and look up to. Her love for students, humble attitude and passion for making a difference sets her apart. She is so very deserving of this honor and we are grateful for all that she does to make LEHS better place for all who she comes in contact with.
LEHS Paraprofessional of the Year - Mrs. Louise Natoli
Mrs. Louise Natoli does an amazing job taking care of those around her. She serves her colleagues in the Special Education Department by scheduling ARD’s, arranging coverage for teachers, and contacting parents. She makes it her mission to make sure every student she comes across is on a path of success. She will learn the information a student is struggling with and then find the best way the student learns so she can re-teach it for them in a way that they can understand. She has a sixth sense for when a student needs a break, and when to push them to work a little harder, and the students respond. Mrs. Natoli celebrates small successes which for her students are BIG milestones that help build their confidence. Mrs. Natoli’s constant persistence in helping others makes a difference every single day at LEHS. We are fortunate to have her on our team!
LEHS Auxilary Employee of the Year - Ms. Maria Ortiz
Maria Ortiz is an important member of our FamiLE. She goes above and beyond to make sure that our school looks nice. She works very hard to support our students and staff. There is no job to small or big that she is not there helping. Maria makes it a point to smile and speak every time she sees you Little Elm High School is a big building but Maria can be seen everywhere there is a job to do. Maria also works at athletic events where she also greets visitors to our building with the same friendly smile she has for each of us. We are proud to work with her and blessed to count her as one of the LEHS FamiLE!
Shattered Dreams
On Wednesday, May 1st, the Junior Class heard from Sean and Jenny Carter. Sean suffered a traumatic brain injury from a drunk driving accident and is now on a mission to educate young people on the dangers of drinking and driving You can read more about Sean and Jenny's presentation on their website When Sean Speaks.
Shattered Dreams, targets underage drinking and driving, and involves the dramatization of an alcohol-related accident staged at the school. The LEHS Shattered Dreams program was held Wednesday, May 1st and Thursday, May 2nd. While the Junior Class watched, police, fire, and other emergency personnel responded to the scene.
Throughout the day, the Grim Reaper entered a classroom every 15 minutes and select a student or faculty victim, known as the “Living Dead”. When the program first originated in the mid-1990s, the 15-minute time period represented how often someone was killed in an alcohol-related accident.

Seniors Aimen Shah and Bella Argentine Co-Presidents or our DECA chapter and Amy Lamberson President of The Lobo Lair have been leaders in DECA for three years. Senior Tatum Mowery is to be commended for achieving the highest DECA success in her first year of membership while still finding time to graduate in the top 10. Teenagers who are anxious or depressed often turn to pot or alcohol to make themselves feel better. It's easy to get, their friends are doing it, and there’s no stigma attached. It may actually help with their symptoms in the short term. But substance use can also delay and undermine their ability to get effective, lasting help and put them on a collision course with addiction.
This week on childmind.org we feature a comprehensive guide to substance use and mental health disorders, developed in collaboration with the Partnership for Drug Free Kids. In it we examine how substance use interacts specifically with disorders in adolescents and young adults — how does it affect symptoms, behavior, treatment, and long-term prognosis? The guide is for both parents and teenagers themselves, it’s downloadable, and we hope it will enable families to make decisions that will be effective for them, now and in the future.
