Mr. Glover's Weekly Update
I hope that you are enjoying a wonderful Sunday afternoon. The hope is that wherever you are that the effect of our weather has not negatively affected you over the past couple of days. Last week was a wonderful start of the year!! We were so happy to have all of your children on campus with so much positive energy as they were excited to be with their friends and teachers. Thank you all for preparing your children for the first few days of school and joining us in making our opening experience so awesome.
As we enter into our first official week of school, there are a few things that we would like you to all keep in mind;
Please review the Raider Reminder with your child. Our educators made an effort to use the first few days of school to establish trusting relationships with the students. Next week we will be establishing clear expectations for the students while they are on campus. Some of the major focuses will be around the following;
Student Behavior
Cell Phone Policy
Gum Chewing on campus
Dress Code
Foundational Principles - Respect, Responsibility, Hard Working and Kindness
All of these expectations are put in place to ensure that our students are provided with a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging. BMMS thanks you for your support and collaboration in creating this environment for our students.
Have a great Monday, Raiders!!
As you may be aware, San Diego County may experience some intense weather this weekend because of Hurricane Hilary that has formed in the Pacific Ocean, just south of Baja California. Although forecasters say it’s likely to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reaches our county, there is the potential for extreme weather such as high winds, flash flooding, rain, and thunderstorms Sunday through Tuesday.
PUSD will be monitoring the storm as it makes its way toward the region and will communicate with you through our regular channels if the storm has any impact on school facilities or operations. We care about the safety of our community and encourage you to sign up for Alert San Diego and visit the County of San Diego website to boost your personal preparedness for storms and flooding. The San Diego County Office of Education has also compiled these resources and tips to stay safe during rain and flooding.
Traffic Options for Families
We are all working to maneuver through the obstacles at the construction in front of both Sunset Hills Elementary and Black Mountain Middle School have caused during the start of the year. We would like to provide you with options for how to effectively and efficiently pick up and drop off your child. The map below provides four viable options for families that will assist in alleviating the traffic congestion at both the morning and afternoon pick up and drop off. Please review the map and attempt to utilize one of the alternative drop off and pick up locations as we collaboratively work through this process.
Traffic Options for Families
Option A - Beginning this week we will be opening the access gate that allows students to enter the school sites from the Sunset Hills campus in the morning for drop off. Every day, except for Wednesday, the gate located on Black Mountain Road just before you reach Oviedo Street, will be opened for students to gain access to the campus. Beginning at 7:30am, we will have school staff there to supervise and manage the entrance and students will be directed to go directly to the Black Mountain campus via the blacktops area. This gate will be opened from a limited time and closed promptly at 8:00am. This will allow families not to have to enter onto Oviedo St. and avoid entering this congested traffic area. If you and your child are planning on using this option, please inform them to not enter the Sunset Hills Elementary School campus. Students are to move directly to the Black Mountain campus if they choose to use this option.
Option B - Sunset Hills Elementary has graciously offered to allow our families to utilize their front drop off area for our students and families at BMMS they have asked that we only use the drive-through area in the front of the school and not the back parking area that is open during construction. This is reserved for their staff for parking throughout the day. When using this option please pull as far forward as possible to the second location closest to Black Mountain Middle School and quickly offload your student to enter the school campus. reminder all student insurance will happen at the front of the school and not decide Access Road.
Option C - Option C is for the morning drop off only. Families and students may utilize the Mount Carmel drop off area that provides access to the walking path between the two schools. These students will be able to enter the campus from the back of the school. At the moment, Mount Carmel’s campus provides a path that allows for an easier drop off, if your student can maneuver through the walking path on the east side of the campus. This will not be an option for after school as Mount Carmel High School will still be in session during our release at the end of the day.
Options D & E - These options allow for families to enter Oviedo St. and drop their students off at the street curbs. We ask that if you do use this option that you, please use extreme caution when offloading your children. Please be alert around the crosswalk area as many of our students will be walking to school and this crosswalk will be highly trafficked. Please do not drop off students directly in front of the school driveway. If possible, please use the drop off areas in front of Sunset Hills Elementary or the side street on Oviedo Way. We have informed SDPD of the traffic impacts due to the construction in front of the school, however, please follow all the rules of the road along these areas.
At the moment we are scheduled to be fully completed with the solar panel installations at the end of the month of September. Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout this entire process.
ADA Unloading Zone for Families
During the solar construction at BMMS, we have had to close the parking lot with the limited spaces reserved for educators and staff. There have been questions regarding the ADA accessible areas for families during the school’s pick up and drop off periods. Please review the following information in hopes to clarify the status of these locations for families with proper ADA placards and certification.
Morning unloading of your children is acceptable in the ADA Unloading Area if requested and in possession of the proper ADA indentation. This area is available for quick drop off your students.
This area will also be available for afternoon pickup of students once the buses have exited the parking lot (this is usually 15 minutes or so after the end of the school day).
If you needing to conduct school business during the school day on campus, there are limited (2) ADA spaces available next to the MPR. Please do not parking in driving lanes as this is still an active construction area.
As we work through this phase of construction on campus, we appreciate your patience and understanding. Thank you for your continued support and collaboration
ChromeBook Information
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year!
We are aware that some students have been facing challenges connecting to the PUSD Wi-Fi on Chromebooks when they have not been connected to the internet for a while. This appears to be related to the time on the device not being accurate. In previous years, students and staff have been able to manually change the time to resolve this issue, but Google has made changes that make this no longer possible.
Here are two possible solutions:
- Students in grades 3-12 can take the Chromebook home and connect to their family Wi-Fi network and log in. This will update the date and time and the student should automatically connect successfully to the PUSD Wi-Fi network when they return to school.
- We have temporarily removed the password from PUSD-Guests to help alleviate this issue. Students can connect to the internet through PUSD-Guests on their Chromebook and the date and time will update. They should automatically be reconnected to the PUSD network after first login.
