Prepare for Summer!
As we wind up the school year and prepare for summer, we encourage everyone to read and learn all summer long!
Fireflies Baseball Team Visits Crayton
Last month, Fireflies Baseball Team members visited Crayton to discuss anti-bullying measures. Two sixth-grade classes came to the Crayton Library to meet the team and take part in the discussion. The Fireflies asked our students how they could help prevent bullying, help students who are being bullied, and reminded them that they had the support of the Crayton community if they felt they were being bullied. The Fireflies have proven themselves as invested, caring community partners and role models, so the students listened and had great respect for the team. We look forward to a follow-up visit on May 8th and to the Crayton field trip to Spirit Communications Park where strong readers have earned a day at the ball park. The Fireflies are supporting summer reading programs and asking all fans to keep reading. Thanks Fireflies! We appreciate what you are doing for our students.

At last count, Crayton had almost 1600 eBooks on its Follett Shelf, and last year, we circulated over 1700. That included the USA format books that entire classes read at the same time. Do the math! For the Crayton community, eBooks are here to stay, and they are popular. At least half of our students have access to the internet and have smart phones or some personal device that can be used to read eBooks over the summer. If the Crayton Library is closed in July, our students are still able to access reading material on Follett Shelf. They can be on vacation at the Eiffel Tower on Bastille Day and pull up an eBook on Crayton's Follett Shelf. What's on our shelf? The most popular fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as a large selection of Lightbox Books can be found if you have a Crayton login. More titles are on their way and should be available before the end of May. You can't beat year-round access to your favorite books!
Summer Learning Challenge
Once again the Richland Library will offer one of the country's best summer learning challenges. Remember--learning is for everyone--all ages--all backgrounds--everyone! So how do you get started? You can go online at http://www.richlandlibrary.com/summer or visit one of the library's locations and sign up. You make the plan, you keep the library up-to-date on your progress, and you will be invited to the grand celebration in August. Learning something new should involve reading, but it's not just reading. As any librarian will tell you, putting your reading to work by applying your newly acquired knowledge is crucial to your education and promotes brain health. Many Crayton students have already registered and are planning museum visits, trips to new cities and national parks, learning to swim, listening to classical music, and going to computer camps. According to the Richland Library, it's all good, and it all fits into any summer learning challenge plan that you design. Think creatively, think out of the box, go learn something new, tell your local librarian all about it, and party!
