From the Assistant Director
We have had a great first week back! I've thoroughly enjoyed spending my mornings welcoming our students with their bright smiles and positive attitudes.
This week started off with a whole school assembly. At that assembly I talked about the importance of finding your "why," or your purpose. I would like all of our students to pursue their interests and passions with curiosity and relentlessness. Our focus this year is not only on student academic output, but also social and emotional wellbeing as well. It is my great hope that our school can help our students locate what makes them come alive.
Our students also started to form smaller communities in house. In house we played games, watched WUW, and also collaborated as a whole school to determine our school-wide behavioral expectations. We also challenged one another to build the highest spaghetti tower during long house today! It has been a great deal of fun.
Classes are also underway! A great deal of learning, laughing, and engagement filled our building. Students and teachers alike have been adjusting to the new schedule, which may take some time to become routine. This week most classes have been focusing on expectations. Parents can locate their children's Assignment packets here.
I also hope that parents have saved the date for August 27th at 5:45pm for our Back To School Night event! Do not let language keep you from coming and meeting your students incredible teachers. If you contact me in advance I will get you a translator. We are very much looking forward to meeting you, sharing our expectations and excitement at the opportunity to teach your children!
Volleyball and Cross Country held their tryouts this week and will have their first matches next week! We hope you can join us; more information is below.
Finally, students will select their clubs next week at the Tastes of CDS event held in the Phoenix Cafe. This is a first ever club fair, where all clubs will share their missions with the community, recruit new members, and fundraise. There will also be music and entertainment. It should be a really great time! Students should look for the sign up form following the event on the 28th.
That is all for now. It has been a great week!
All the best,
Jason Musselman

Phoenix Time Begins
Phoenix Time
This year we have made major changes to the schedule based on empirical research, parent/student and teacher input and to ensure we are in alignment with our schools mission. One of those changes was to create a non-academic time for students known as Phoenix Time. This 35-minute period takes place before lunch four days a week and provides students the opportunity to explore their passions and go beyond the curriculum. Both teachers and students are able to collaborate in new ways, build important relationships and share the things they love which has all been shown to increase student performance and overall well-being.
MISSION: Phoenix Time is dedicated to providing students and teachers with opportunities to…
go beyond the curriculum,
explore and share their passions, and
enhance the school’s culture.
Below you'll see some of the great things happening around our school during this time! Take a look at all the great upcoming offerings during this time HERE.

Updates & General Information
Lunch ID Policy
There has been an important change with our lunch ID Policy. Students are required to bring their student ID card to lunch on a daily basis. This helps the cafeteria staff gather data about which lunch options are popular and as well as to eliminate food waste.
If students have lost or forgotten their student ID card they may head to the high school office to retrieve a replacement for the day. However, students may only borrow a replacement once a term.
If you want to renew or replace your ID, please see Admissions Office located on the first floor. Please note that renewal feel will be charged.

Welcome Back CDS!
Dear CDS High School Parents,
I hope all of you have had a fantastic summer vacation full of rest and relaxation. We are so excited to welcome all of you back to CDS for another fantastic year of growth in the 2019-20 school year.
CDS teachers have been working hard over the summer to develop their lessons and create a positive learning environment where all students can achieve their learning goals.
Together we will do our best to help students to grow academically and develop the 21st century skills they need to be successful in high school and beyond. We will discuss this in more detail during our upcoming Back to School Night event.
Back to School Night
We invite you to attend our Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 27th from 5:45 to 8pm.
This year the format for our class will be a little different. Instead of three nights for various grades, we will be doing a single night where parents get the opportunity to meet each of their student’s teachers in their classroom. You will want to have the ability to look at your student’s schedule and classroom location on Powerschool (This will not be available until early August). You can see the schedule of events below.
Come find out about how we plan on helping your child succeed and how we can be partners in this endeavor. This is a great opportunity to strengthen our community and an important one in the start of a year long journey.
We are thrilled to have your students join us this year and I hope to see you at the event!
ON LANGUAGE:
Please do not allow your lack of English stop you from joining us. While we can not accommodate all parents, we generally have 5-10 student volunteers who can follow you from class to class and translate for you. If you need their services please do not hesitate to reach out.
We also encourage you to bring your own students who can help you as well.
