MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TESTING OUT PROCESS:
Public Act 335, Section 21B, of the state code, requires that any high school student be offered the opportunity to “test out” of any course offered by his/her high school. In SLCS, we offer high school courses in the middle school and extend this opportunity to middle school students who will be taking high school courses and also extend to students who wish to advance in math (Math 6 and Math 7). Students who successfully test out will join their grade level peers in the Math PLUS program. Current Math PLUS students who test out will move an additional grade level up and join the PLUS students in their next sequential math course. In addition, along with the exam, students may also be required to demonstrate mastery through basic assessments used in the class, which may include but not be limited to, a portfolio, research papers, projects and/or oral presentations. If the student passes the testing out assessment, she/he will receive credit in the course toward graduation if it is a HS course (Algebra, Geometry), as well as allow the student to satisfy core content requirements. Once the testing out exam is passed, a student may not receive credit for a lower course in that course sequence. While the student will receive credit for testing out of a course, a G (credit) will be entered on the student’s transcript, but a grade will not be included in the computation of the grade point average. Testing out is offered in June of each year. Students should discuss the possibilities with their counselor. Forms are available on the website. Students who took the PLUS test this past winter and were not accepted are welcome take the test out as an alternate means to get into the PLUS program. The deadline to turn in requests is May 19, 2023.
JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN and KINDERGARTEN Enrollment for Fall 2023 -
In order to help plan for staffing and budget for the 2023-2024 Academic Year we are asking that families who have a student who will turn 5 on or before November 30, 2023, to enroll now for the 2023-2024 school year. Please visit our website for more information: slcs.us/Parents&Community/Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Kindergarten eligibility for the 2023-24 school year:
To be eligible for Kindergarten, students must be 5 on or before September 1, 2023.
Students turning 5 between September 2 and December 1, 2023, are ideal candidates for our JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM; however, they may be enrolled in either Junior Kindergarten (limited spaces available) or Kindergarten with a signed waiver.
Students who turn 5 after December 1, 2023, are NOT eligible for Kindergarten or Junior Kindergarten for the 2023-24 school year.
Enrollment forms for next year’s Kindergarten are available on the district’s website and linked here in blue text:

SCHOOL POLICY REMINDERS:
ATTENDANCE
Attendance Letters Clarification:
In Michigan Elementary attendance is recorded twice a day (AM and PM). The attendance letter totals are the number of periods (2 periods = 1 day) a student is marked Absent or Tardy. For example: If the letter indicates - Total (Absent and Tardy): 23 this means 23 absent or tardy periods which is equal to 11.5 days.
STEP 1 - When a student is absent 10 days or has 15 days of combined absences and tardies, the office sends an email to notify parents/guardians, and an Attendance Letter in the Skyward Family Access portfolio for parents to view.
STEP 2 - When a student has accrued 15 days of absences or 20 days of combined absences and tardies before March, the office sends an email to notify parents/guardians, and an Attendance Letter in the Skyward Family Access portfolio for parents to view. A mandatory meeting is scheduled with the principal.
STEP 3 - When a student misses 20 days absent or 25 days combined absences and tardies, the office sends an email to notify parents/guardians, and an Attendance Letter in the Skyward Family Access portfolio for parents to view. A referral to the Youth Assistance Office may be made.
STEP 4 - If non-improvement or patterning is found, the office will initiate a referral to the Oakland County Truancy Program.
We understand that for each illness a student may not have a medical note. Often students experience illness that resolves in 24 to 72 hours without seeking the input of a healthcare professional. In the event that your student is frequently absent for illness please consider seeking the advice of your healthcare profession. Whenever your student has a medical/dental/orthodontic/physical therapy/eye care appointment please provide your classroom teacher or the office medical documentation for these types of absences, as those absences will then be medically excused and not count toward truancy totals. If you have questions or concerns about your student's attendance please email or call your student's classroom teacher or the office staff.
Smart Phones/Cameras/Recording Devices/Smart Watches/Learning Gizmos
These devices are not permitted at school. Please review the Sayre Student and Family handbook. These devices are not allowed because they are communication devices with audio and pictures capability which can be a distraction from the learning process and create community concerns regarding the violation of privacy when worn/used in community bathrooms. If your student is found to be using, or in possession, of these devices the device will be confiscated. Parents/Guardians will be notified and need to contact the office to arrange a time to pick up the device. Thank you for your cooperation!

SLCS DISTRICT UPDATE:
SAYRE COMMUNICATION:
The Sayre Elementary Principal is Mrs. Susan Maurus - mauruss@slcs.us - during the school year, whenever possible, her office sends a weekly email of information which often includes a video.
Please add these four SEPERATE contacts to your phone/email list of contacts:
1. Sayre Elementary Office, Phone: 1-248-573-8500, Email #1: sayre@slcs.us,
2. SLCS - Email: donotreply@slcs.us
3. Sayre Attendance - please call 248-573-8475 - to report your student(s) absence/late arrival/early departure. Please include your student’s first and last name with the spelling of the last name along with the reason for absence from school. The office is busy in the morning so please call this number to leave a recorded message with any attendance related information - absences, late arrival, early dismissal - prior to 9:30AM.
If you are emailing your student's teacher in advance about any planned absence (appointments, vacation, days off, holiday) then please also copy the Sayre Office at sayre@slcs.us. For student safety and Michigan Department of Education state regulations attendance for each student is reconciled each day by the office staff. Including the office in your email communications regarding attendance helps your student’s teacher from having to forward your communication to the office for the attendance record.
