Valentines to the Troops
Our Highlights: What We've Been Rockin' At!
What a fabulous time we have been having in our rock star room!
As a cumulative project, we put on a wonderful in-class Poetry Slam. (A HUGE thank you to Colleen for helping create the festive Poetry Slam environment!) Students published two of their favorite poems and then shared their favorite of those two poems to participate in the slam. To quote one second grader, "It was epic!" Students presented their poems in the candle light and the audience snap-clapped (in classic Beatnik style). Students displayed their poems on the "big screen" so that we could see their visual artistry as well as their verbal artistry. I agree with Kai, it was epic! I have made a video with the footage I shot from the Poetry Slam. It's at the bottom, check it out!
We also have been working hard learning about Eleanor Roosevelt as a class and writing a biography on her. We then broke into groups and learned about one of the following, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, Rosa Parks, or Jackie Robinson. Then we pulled out information as a group and started to develop our biographies on those people as well. This should be a great start to our individual biographies coming up.
We began our NWEA testing and will continue it when we get back from break. Students have been working on using one of three strategies to stay focused during the test: taking a few deep breaths, tapping their hands on the knees or thighs gently, or rubbing their cheeks. Sometimes we all need a little break to get more focused, these quiet tricks are ones that can be used at home during homework time as well.
Last, but not least, we celebrated many things during our Valentine's Day Party. We made valentines for our parents (hope the picture was fabulous!), we made valentines for our classmates, and we even made valentines for the Troops overseas. To top it off, we had one fantastic Valentines day feast at the end after all of that hard work and fun making those valentines. At the feast, we practiced our manners of placing the napkin on our laps, using polite words to ask for more, how to cheers, and simply enjoyed ourselves. Another thank you to Colleen and our AMAZING volunteers for helping our party to be so successful! What a blast it was!
