In this newsletter, ExCEL "wood" like to spotlight the activities of Mr. Davis' construction class for the month. They have been quite busy!
Mr. Davis uses a very hands on approach so students have been busy using mitre saws, drills, sanders and much more! Mr. Davis continually reminds his students of OSHA safety rules so rest assured that his students know how to prevent and respond correctly to any construction hazard in the classroom.
The photos featured are the Cornhole boards that Mr. Davis' advanced classes built that celebrate Pine Tree and alumni. These Cornhole boards will be at the Homecoming game at Pete's Plaza in the stadium so be sure to stop by and try them out.
Other photos in this issue highlight the advanced construction class is currently working on: Christmas trees for props to be used at The Social Snap, a photo studio here in Longview. The finished product is sure to be awesome!
Perhaps the most exciting part of construction for the month was starting fires with a Bullex ITS fire trainer. This system allows for live fire training to simulate a variety of realistic training scenarios for fire safety training. The students then used refillable, water fire extinguishers to put the fires out. Not a hair was singed!
Knightly Meagley, a student in Mr. Davis' class, says "He is an excellent teacher". Knightly is looking forward to using the skills Mr. Davis has taught him beyond graduation.
HIGH SCHOOL
This is Homecoming Week at Pine Tree, and also Red Ribbon Week so there are many activities on campus.
Monday, a Community-wide pep rally was held at the stadium with football, band, Precision, cheer, BUCS and other groups involved. The Homecoming Court was introduced and everyone had a chance to get pumped up for the game on Friday.
Tuesday, the Cross Country boys and girls were in Grand Prairie for regional competition. Both teams qualified from district, and Pine Tree stood an excellent chance of sending competitors to the state cross country meet in Georgetown in November.
Wednesday, those students who still needed to take the PSAT test took that exam and complete that process. The counselors at PTHS have been working hard to make sure that all students have a chance to excel in their academics, so the test taking part is an important one for all students to pursue.
Also, on Wednesday, the Homecoming Court met after school to practice for the game on Friday night. The voting for the King and Queen was held during lunches, and all students voted for their choice. The winners will be announced on Friday night during pre-game ceremonies.
Volleyball ended its season with a game on Tuesday, while football needs victories in its last games to make the playoffs. Basketball has already started and the boys and girls are practicing and holding scrimmages in the next couple of weeks. Powerlifting is also getting ready to get started as is boys and girls soccer.
PALS is visiting elementary campuses for tutoring, and the BUCS held a positive message day to help in the fight against bullying on all campuses. BUCS are handing out bracelets to Central Office and all lower grades this next week to further the anti-bullying program.
Students are busy with classes and other academic opportunities to get ready for their future. It is a busy time at PTHS, but everyone is enjoying the cooler weather and the chance to make memories which will last a lifetime.
PINE TREE JUNIOR HIGH
PTJH is excited to recognize our current Pirates of the Month: 8th graders Bailey Robles and Adam Venegas, and 7th graders Katherine Recinos and Armon East! These students have shown consistent pride in their behavior and performance in the classroom as well as in various extracurricular activities.
Members of the PTJH Choir, under the direction of Johanna Eppley, competed for a spot in the TMEA Region 4 Middle School Choir. Nine students placed and will perform with the All Region Choir on November 6th: Sopranos - Mia Cervantes, Alexis Hernandez, Sadie Miller, Autumn Hunter, Mackenzie Richardson; Altos - Emma Ramirez, Kamryn Taylor,
Abigail Juarez; Tenor - Kaleb Kelley.
The ArtMakers Club, led by Mrs. Boswell, is meeting weekly to pursue their craft and work on projects to be entered in the VASE competition. This week, they practiced designs for Fall Fest Face Painting.
Lady Pirate Volleyball players recognized parents, guardians, and PTJH faculty and staff during the inaugural Lady Pirate Crow’s Nest event held at the season’s last home game. Coach Goodman said, “The Crow’s Nest is a small lookout high on a ship’s main mast… for us, it represents the small circle of people our students look up to, who they feel care about their future, and/or who make a difference in their daily life.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Pine Tree Middle School hosted families for a UIL KICK OFF event last week. More than 200 students and parents attended to enjoy hot dogs and speak and meet with our UIL coaches.
Mrs. Kyle and Mrs. Parker happily helped students sign up for their events Tuesday Night.
PTMS has had more than 130 students sign up for UIL academic competitions, and practices will begin this week for many students.
Our fifth grade students have been working on their research skills with a Living Museum project in their reading classes. Students created a report about a famous persons’ life and then read their report when others pressed their museum’s button.
Students will present their projects during literacy night for our campus. Students are completing our first round of CBA’s here on campus this week. There are many fun activities planned for Red Ribbon and Homecoming week. Pine Tree Middle School Book Fair is November 1-5 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reading Under the Stars Literacy Night is November 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
PARKWAY ELEMENTARY
AR Competition
Our school competed in a school wide accelerated reader or AR competition. There were two brackets formed. Bracket 1 consisted of 1st and 2nd grade. Bracket 2 consisted of 3rd and 4th grade. Each class went head to head each week to see who would end up on top with the most AR points that week.
With many intense weeks of competition we had Ms. Rosen’s class from bracket 1 versus Ms. Campbell’s class from bracket 2 playing in the consolation bracket. It was a close battle, but Ms. Campbell’s class came out victorious. Then, in the Winners bracket, we had Ms. James’s class from bracket 1 versus Ms. Castillo’s class from bracket 2. The WINNER of the whole AR Competition goes to Ms. Castillo’s class!! Everyone did such a great job. Way to work hard!
The Titanic
Ms. Morgan's CEER class has been working on their Titanic projects. After they read I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, students brainstormed ways they could show the Titanic timeline with a sequence of events. We cannot wait to see how all of the projects turn out! Stay tuned!
Parkway Picasso’s
Our very own Parkway Picasso’s are working on color mixing along with creating new colors in preparation for a painting project in the coming weeks. Students are writing recipes for colors, and trying out new combinations to discover what works best with the best results.
BIRCH ELEMENTARY
Genius Hour
On Friday, October 15th our BFF had the opportunity to learn a new talent and/or hobby from several community members and Pine Tree family members during Genius Hour. There were a total of 30 clubs with over 20 being community leaders. Thank you to all our volunteers for making this event a huge success! A very special thank you to Mrs. Reneau, Mrs. Massey, and Mrs. Meitzen for organizing and coordinating such a fun and exciting day for our Birch First Pirates
Awards Assemblies
On Friday, October 22nd we celebrated our Birch First students for their successes and many achievements throughout the 1st 9 weeks of school. We are so excited to be able to have family and friends on campus to help us recognize these deserving students.
Imagination Fair
On October 25th, our Gifted and Talented students traveled to Region 7 Service Center in Kilgore to showcase their storytelling skills at the Imagination Fair.
The Imagination Fair provides gifted students in 1st through 3rd the opportunity to showcase storytelling in an interactive format. Prior to the event, these students research various forms and genres of storytelling, learn about stories from other cultures, and discover the impact of storytelling throughout history. They then either choose a story or create their own story to tell during the Imagination Fair.
A professional storyteller will begin the day telling interactive stories and later will work with a select group of students to help them develop and refine their storytelling skills to share with the Imagination Fair participants. To culminate the event, students participate in a hands-on creative problem-solving activity. We are so proud of our Birch First Pirates for representing our campus so well.
Birch First Fall Book Fair October 25-28
During the week of October 25th through the 28th, our Birch First Pirates were invited to shop at our annual Fall Book Fair. In addition to classes shopping throughout the week, there were opportunities for our families to come and enjoy the book fair as well.
Monday night our Birch First families visited our Fall Family Night and made a record number of purchases to support the Birch First library. Tuesday was our “Grand” lunch event where all grandparents or people who are grand to our students were invited to come have lunch and browse the many selections that were available.
We Love our Teachers Wednesday was a huge success with many students and their families fulfilling their teacher’s wish lists. We thank you all for your generosity and support of our students and teachers!

FINE ARTS/UIL ACADEMICS
On Saturday, October 23rd, the Pine Tree Pride Marching Band competed in the UIL Area C Marching Contest against the very best in North/East Texas. The Pride finished 9th overall, and broke their previous records of finishing 14th (6 years ago), and finishing 20th (2 years ago).
We are so very proud of them, and for the dramatic improvement in just one year's time. Come out this Friday to see their last full performance of this year's marching show Dia De Los Muertos on Homecoming night. Thank you, PTISD administration and teachers, for your support this year.

Make sure to come out to the stadium on Friday at 7:30 for the big game!
LESLY SUAREZ - ELEMENTARY PARENT LIASION
Hello Pine Tree Families!
I want to thank our student's families for taking time to work on the Day of the Dead family project. It is an amazing opportunity to take special time to learn about a new culture and to bond with your children. As long as I can remember, I've always loved hearing about my parent's past and reliving great memories of family members that I'd never met. That curiosity always existed because I understood that the people that shaped them might have influenced the way my parents raised me and loved me the way they currently do. So thank you for sharing your special memories of your loved ones to your children.
Also, I want to proudly announce that Parkway and Birch will be hosting an event for families of our Emerging Bilingual students for Day of the Dead! If you are a parent to a student that is considered Emerging Bilingual and would like to participate, please contact me at lsuarez@ptisd.org!
