Multiplication!!!!!!
Our math groups have proceeded to multiplication! Students are working toward the realization that multiplication can be modeled using a variety of strategies including repeated addition, equal groups, arrays, area models, and jumps on a number line. In addition to learning this smorgasbord of strategies, by the end of the multiplication unit of study, students will be expected to master the following Indiana Academic Standards:
- "Multiply and divide within 100 using strategies, such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 x 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8), or properties of operations.
- Solve real-world problems involving whole number multiplication and division within 100 in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities (e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem).
- Solve two-step real-world problems using the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem).
- Interpret a multiplication equation as equal groups (e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each). Represent verbal statements of equal groups as multiplication equations."
Funny...I am more than certain that I didn't even utter the word multiplication until fourth grade. I sometimes feel badly that such huge expectations are placed on our children at such an early age.
I am getting many requests for copies of math facts sheets. It pleases me more than you'll ever know that you are offering such amazing support at home. However, due to the varied levels of the students, I'm simply not able to keep up with these requests. I have, however, found a website that offers at-home printing of the various multiplication fact families. Click here to find the K-5 Learning Math and Reading Enrichment website that offers these printibles.
Be Drug and Bully-Free
You will find the remaining theme days throughout the month of October listed below. We will continue focusing on making healthy choices and pledging to live drug and bully-free lives. Don't forget your favorite team gear on Tuesday!

Fire Prevention Week
In honor of Fire Prevention Week, firefighters from the Liberty Volunteer Fire Department gave an informative presentation to the third grade students of LES. Your child brought home a waiver that must be completed in order for your child to ride the fire truck this upcoming spring. Please return this form as soon as possible. If your child is looking for some more fire safety fun click here.
Star Lab
Also this week, students were treated to a portable planetarium known as Star Lab. Mrs. Migoski hosted the budding astronomers for Thursdays informational sessions.
