Number Talks with Student made subitizing plates (also listed below in the fluency station for math workshop) :
- Give students sticker dots and small paper plates (emphasize numbers 10-20). They can draw a number from a stack and arrange the dots on the plates however they like. They can show their plate to another student and the student can explain how they "see the dots" arranged. Add to the stack and you have a whole set of subitizing plates to use as a number talk opening.
Number Talks with Dot Images (as shown in previous units):
The link bleow contains dot images. Each dot image number talks consists of three problems, A, B, C. The sequence of problems within a given number talk allows students to apply the strategies from previous problems to subsequent problems. As each problem is shown, ask students, “How many dots do you see? How do you see them?”

Race to Fill/Empty the Cup
Need:
- objects for counting (cubes, beans, counters, etc)
- Solo type cup for each player
- Number cards to 20
How to Play: Each player rolls the die and then adds that many cubes to their cup. The first one to fill the cup wins!
Variation: Work backwards and empty the cups instead of filling them. Before you start, have your child guess how many rolls it will take to empty the cups.
MAKE IT SEASONAL: By using a heart shaped cookie cutter with small pom-pom balls to fill the heart!
Count and See
Have students use Ipads or digital cameras to find pictures of objects in the school that could be counted and create a class picture story.
