Edgewood's Tiger Talk
October 27, 2019
We are committed to our journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
Notes from the Principal (Mrs. Boyd)
Did you know that a person's character is pretty much developed by the age of 12? Yes, 12! As our kids are young, our inclination is often to protect them. We want them to be happy. We want them to be supported. We don't want them to suffer.
But sometimes in doing those things, we rob kids of the opportunity to learn how to deal with challenges. When children manage through challenges as kids, they learn that they are capable, and this builds resilience when they confront bigger challenges as teens and adults.
Don't worry--I'm not suggesting that we stop protecting our students. That is our #1 job as caretakers of children. But there are some simple things that we might consider doing/not doing that can help our children to learn that they are capable and resilient.
- If they forget their snack, don't run it to school. No one starves in 3 hours, and it might help them learn to take more responsibility for packing up their things.
- Let them lose so that they learn to pick back up and try again. Uno is a lot less high stakes than a job search.
- Push them outside their comfort zone. Prompt them to reach out to someone to solve a problem (e.g. getting an ingredient from a neighbor) rather than doing it for them.
We want our children to be responsible, confident adults. But unlike puberty, character doesn't have an onset at a particular age. Our character is built through our experiences. If we want our children to grow into teens and adults with strong character, we must give them opportunities and experiences to develop it from a young age.
