- Attention 6th graders who are participating in the American Scholastic contest. The contest takes place after school on Wednesday, February 6th. Report to Mrs. Geisler's room in 302 with your charged Chromebook, calculator, and a snack. You will need a ride home afterward. Please contact Mrs. Geisler if you have any questions. This is only for 6th grade. The 8th-grade contest is scheduled for Monday, February 11th.
- Attention any girls in grades 6 to 8 that enjoy basketball. There is a basketball clinic over February break at Schroeder for girls aged 11 to 14. The dates are Feb 19th, Feb 20th and Feb 21st from 2 to 4pm. If you are interested please see Ms. Farrell in the girls’ locker room for more information.
- Do you like basketball? Enjoy shooting hoops with your friends? Do you play on a team? If you said yes to any of those questions, then you should definitely sign up for the Spry Charity Basketball Game which will be played Friday, March 1st at Schroeder High School. You will be part of a round-robin house competition, earning big points towards the Spirit Stick. Each game is only 5 minutes long, so we can make sure every house gets to play against the other. Students will be chosen at random to play, and if chosen, will be notified on Monday.
- Attention any girl who is interested in trying out for modified girls lacrosse, there will be a mandatory informational meeting after school in the East cafeteria on Tuesday, February 12th. We will be finished by 3:00 so you can get a ride home or take the late bus. It is very important that if you cannot make this meeting you see Coach Walzer in the girls PE office.

NOTE FROM THE NURSE
A reminder about Pertussis (Whooping Cough): Pertussis is always present in the community and usually starts to increase at about the same time as the flu. If your child develops a persistent cough that becomes worse over time, he/she should be evaluated by his/her physician so that the appropriate tests are performed and treatment is initiated.
Students suspected of having Pertussis should not attend school until lab test results come back negative, or for positive results, the student has completed the entire course of antibiotics and has been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the assistance of fever-reducing medication. Pertussis most often occurs in infants and younger children who frequently acquire the disease from older siblings, adolescents, and adults who have a mild disease. While Pertussis most frequently occurs in unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children, it also occurs in school-age children and adults who have had the recommended Pertussis immunizations. For more information: refer to this link to the DOH Fact Sheet: http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/pertussis/fact_sheet.htm

Parent Information - Vaping
Vaping and possession of vaping paraphernalia are not allowed at Spry Middle School; consequences for violating this school rule start with suspension from school and the possible loss of athletics or co-curricular activities. We appreciate the partnership we have with you and ask for your help in educating your child about the health consequences of vaping and to keep these harmful materials out of our schools.
What is Vaping? Inhaling the water vapor produced from a battery-powered, electronic device which heats a flavored e-liquid contained within the device. The e-liquid may contain varying concentrations of nicotine or THC oil (Marijuana).
What are the risks?
- E-liquids (whether containing nicotine or not) contain harmful chemicals; vapor contains chemicals known to cause cancer
- Nicotine is highly addictive and can damage the developing brain
- Less than 1/2 tsp of nicotine-containing e-liquid can be fatal to a toddler
- Youth who vape are more likely to use other tobacco products in the future
Did You Know?
- Vapor contains cancer-causing chemicals (i.e. formaldehyde) and heavy metals (i.e. nickel)
- Up until late 2016, vaping products (devices and liquids) were not regulated by the FDA
- Vaping products are illegal to sell to youth under 21 (18 in some towns), but can be easily purchased online
- Vaping is a $2.5 billion dollar industry in the US; $125 million is spent on advertising—much of it geared toward youth
- 7,700+ e-liquid flavorings exist—many appealing to kids including fruity, candy or bubblegum flavorings; 85% of e-cigarette users aged 12 –17 use flavored e-liquids
- Vaping devices can be used for other drugs like cannabinoids
