NEWS & NOTES
LUCY CALKINS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The Lucy Calkins PD session for all K, 1st, and 2nd teachers is this Thursday afternoon, 3:05-4:00pm. Our guest presenters have experience implementing Lucy Calkins with primary students. They have previously led training on implementation of Lucy Calkins for teachers throughout the district. We are excited to have them visit and look forward to providing this support for everyone. Special thanks to Courtney Cartlidge for coordinating this training!
COVENANT PRESCHOOL VISIT: We had a few visitors from Covenant Preschool (located on Duval, just down the street from us) last week. The preschool director and some of the teachers came to Davis to learn more about our early childhood program. I shared information with them and we walked through PPCD, PreK, K, and a few 1st grade classrooms. Our visitors were very complimentary of what they saw in the classrooms and were glad to know how they can best prepare preschool children a successful transition to kindergarten at Davis. Way to go early childhood team!
SCIENCE FAIR: It was a real treat to see all of the fantastic science fair projects at our Science Fair Exhibition and Awards event last week. The level of projects was quite impressive, and it was especially nice to see so many 5th grade students participating. Many of the projects are still at Davis, displayed in the library. If you're able, take some time to walk through with your students to see them- it will be time well spent!
'TEACHER TREATS' FOR BIG TO-DO/SPRING FLING: Thanks to many of you for donating a 'Teacher Treat' for the upcoming Big ToDo fundraiser. This is the first of two events where Davis staff will be asked to consider offering a treat to support the PTA fundraising efforts. The next event will be the Spring Fling in April. Teacher Treats will be part of the raffle that takes place at Spring Fling. We wanted to make sure you are aware that these are two separate opportunities. Your support is appreciated whether you choose to donate for one or both events. Whatever your decision, know that every penny raised from your donations goes straight back to our school.
FOCUS ON FAILURE (as we work toward success): With our focus on 'failing forward', I've included a few failure quotes below. It's important for all of us to remember that as we try new, innovative things, we are likely to experience some failures. It's also important for us to provide our students with opportunities that challenge them and allow them to learn from their failures. It has been great to see and hear about 'failing forward' experiences from around that school that ultimately resulted in something better for students. We will continue to celebrate failures and encourage trying new things as we all work to provide our students with the very best learning opportunities.
