News From Mrs. Wegman's Room
May 8th, 2017
Thank you!
Thanks again for all the great treats during Teacher Appreciation Week last week! I sure felt very spoiled and special! I am so lucky to teach at Hoover with so many wonderful families! It is crazy to believe, but this will be my last formal newsletter for the year. If something important arises, I will be sure to send a separate note or email home.
Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
In our last few weeks in language arts, we will read a folktale titled Two of Everything and a nonfiction narrative titled Now and Ben. We will work on comparing and contrasting, write an opinion piece about someone very special in our life, and review some long vowel patterns as well as preposition and possessive pronouns in grammar. Our last full week we will compare different versions of Cinderella and complete our last district writing assessment. Our LAST spelling test will be on Friday, May 19th.
Math
This week we will take our end of the year district assessment. Then we will go back and finish topic 15 on shapes and topic 14 on graphs and charts. Our pacing in second grade does not allow us to get to the "Step-Up to Third Grade" section of our math book. Therefore, we will include this in your child's end of the year folder with their progress report. It will be great practice for your child to work through this over the summer to prepare them for third grade math!
Science/Social Studies/Health
In science, we will observe our beetles one last time, watch the complete life cycle of our brassica plants (hopefully being able to harvest some seeds from the seed pods), and learn the milkweed bug life cycle. We will spend lots of our time focusing on our caterpillars. We will learn their body parts, dicuss molting, observe our chrysalis, and get to see the final stage of the life cycle-butterflies! Our final health lessons focus on staying safe from dangerous things, first aid, being safe with medicines, and fighting germs. Our last social studies chapters are on making a difference in a community and being good citizens. We will be busy these last few weeks!
