Letter from the President

Recently, I picked up one of Dav Pilkey’s Dogman books. I have to tell you I felt like I enjoyed it TOO MUCH! Is that a THING? To enjoy reading too much? It was fun and silly and I kept asking myself, “Why do I keep reading this silly nonsense?” but I actually could not stop! It was pure joy and fun and my only problem was my own boring brain telling me I should be reading something more professional or more serious or more...something.

Anyway, it got me to thinking WHY NOT? Why can’t we have more fun? And that is why the Secondary Reading League has been trying to design some professional development opportunities that are NOT time-consuming and heavy. Rather, just some outings that include learning, food, and professional friends, AND CPDUs! Please reach out to friends, gather a group, and attend some events! We want to see you there and we value your input!

Round Table Book Talk

Thursday, Feb. 27th, 12-3pm

140 North Munn Road

Lindenhurst, IL

The Secondary Reading League is hosting a wonderful FREE professional development opportunity that includes free LUNCH. This event is for ALL TEACHERS who want to learn more about student choice and literacy in the 6-12 classroom.

Why attend? CPDUs available, join in professional conversation, learn more about how to support students, win gift cards!

What is a Roundtable Booktalk? We gather in small groups to discuss and learn about a variety of YA texts and PD texts that can be immediately utilized in the classroom for student Lit Circles, Independent Reading, SEL support, and Book Clubs.

You do not need to be a member to attend our events, so bring a friend. The more the merrier!

Literacy Grant Opportunity

The Secondary Reading League (SRL) has established two (2) $500 Literacy Grants to be awarded to SRL members. This monetary award is intended to support educators in developing new or supporting existing innovative literacy projects in their schools or classrooms.

Interested Secondary Reading League members are encouraged to complete the two-page application form. A committee of SRL members will evaluate the projects using the rubric included with the grant application and select one or more projects to be awarded funding. Those members receiving Literacy Grants will be asked to share a brief, written narrative of the project for a future SRL newsletter. Grant winners will be notified by e-mail and announced at our annual spring booktalk in April. Previous SRL Literacy Grant winners must wait one grant cycle before submitting another grant application.

Please note that the deadline for all applications is February 1, 2020.

If you have questions, contact a Secondary Reading League Board Member or me at any time.

Sincerely,

Erik Borne
