Rocks and Minerals
Mrs. Peirano’s class is studying rocks and minerals to learn how to identify and classify them. They are shown using their observational and investigative skills to chart their data and learn about the different properties. Students worked together in small groups to finish the task. Photos show Danny and Jonah, Brian and AJ, and Bryanna and Josh working at their tables. They have a chart and braille materials as they study 5 different samples.
Happy Valentine's Day, Friends!
Photos below show Wesley with a special message that says "You are special like a fuzzy blanket", Mrs. Hamlin's students standing outside their classroom with handmade Valentines - left to right are LaShawn, Wesley, Kayden and Miles; and Miles is shown with his Super Valentine!

OSSB Cheer Season 2021-22
Returning Varsity Cheerleaders Kurtacee and Maddie (both seniors) were accompanied by seniors Sara “Bill” and Sumaya, eighth-grader, Byata, and our seventh-grade Outstanding Cheerleader, Kynnedi for the 2021-22 OSSB Cheer season. Led by Coaches Traucht and Knight, the team met daily beginning November 1 and the end-of-season competition was held virtually on January 27.
Our cheerleaders learned and created new cheers for basketball, and displayed excellent teamwork to develop a routine to a musical mashup. Another challenging year was overcome with consistency and dedication!
Due to the nature of a virtual submission, we do not yet have the results of our standings. However, the substance of our care and compassion for one another cannot be quantified.
Coach Traucht and Knight, coaching together for years, feel extremely proud of the team and all their efforts.
Black History Month - Martha Louise Morrow Foxx
Martha Louise Morrow Foxx was born in 1902.
Blind from eye disease in infancy, Martha Louise Morrow went on to graduate from the Overbrook School for the Blind. At the age of 18, she started working at the Piney Wood School, while continuing to study at several colleges during the summer, eventually earning Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees.
As a teacher, Mrs. Foxx taught students to read braille and large print and insisted on students learning to be self-sufficient in order to have successful careers after graduation. Her curriculum was adopted by the “white” school for the blind in the late 1940s and many teachers visited the school to learn her teaching techniques.
She taught as a primary teacher at the Piney Wood School from 1929 to 1942 when she became the principal of the school. When the school moved to Jackson Mississippi and became the Mississippi School for Blind Negros, she served as director until she retired in 1969.
