This week - Evolution
Our first unit of 2nd semester is Evolution.
The S7L5 standard states that the students will examine the evolution of living organisms through inherited characteristics that promote survival of organisms and the survival of successive generations of their offspring. The elements include:
a. Explain that physical characteristics of organisms have changed over successive generations (e.g. Darwin’s finches and peppered moths of Manchester).
b. Describe ways in which species on earth have evolved due to natural selection.
c. Trace evidence that the fossil record found in sedimentary rock provides evidence for the long history of changing life forms.
The class has been working on self-paced element activities based on how the individual performed on the pretest. A Tic-Tac-Toe project sheet went home last week. The project is due THIS Friday, January 30th. Most of the assignments will be completed at school. The student will need to complete any assignments not completed during class time.
Activation Sheets - Sending results home soon
Activation questions are completed at the beginning of each class. Currently, the questions asked are a review of 1st semester benchmark items missed by most of the students. During this 10 minutes at the beginning of each class, we delve further into the meaning of the vocabulary and the concept the question covers. The same questions (or questions that are in the spirit of the original question) are asked each day throughout the week. The expectation is that the students will grow in their knowledge from the first of the week to the end. On Friday, a grade is taken. Previously, these activation sheets remained in the classroom. Now, the weekly activation sheets will be coming home. If you have any questions, concerns, or more ideas, please contact me.
