Parent Teacher Conferences Start this week!

If you have not signed up for a slot, please do so immediately! I am looking forward to seeing all of you and chatting about your student's successes. Please be aware the conferences are set for 20 minutes and I will have to adhere to the time restraints due to the fact I am booked back to back.

Math conferences: I will have limited information concerning your child's standing in math class. If you wish to have a math conference or more information, please reach out to your child's math teacher.

THANK YOU

Thank you to all the parents who supported us in a bully free zone on Friday, by donating your time to come decorate our sidewalks with kind messages! Kindness in Chalk Day was a huge success! It definitely had a positive impact on all the children and myself:) Thank you!

Communication

  • We go to UVA on Thursday for the Symphony. Please remember to pack a lunch for your child if you designated that they would bring a lunch from home.
  • On Tuesday, we will headed to the TINKER ROOM at BES to complete our first STEAM project of the year. It is a Social Studies task that correlates to
VA SOL 5.1
The student will demonstrate skills for historical and geographical analysis and responsible citizenship, including the ability to interpret ideas and events from different historical perspectives.

I can't wait to share some of the TINKER masterpieces with you in our next newsletter and at conferences.

  • Please be sure that you have your Parent Portal access. If you need your parent portal access you may pick it up at the front office by showing your driver's license.

Writing

We are in the midst of editing our Writer's Eye papers. The children are applying what they have learned in grammar and editing their own papers. They are also peer editing these papers. Once they have been edited, they will begin publishing their papers in google classroom. Writer's Eye papers will be due on Tuesday, October 20th. If your student is entering the contest, their polished product will be due to Mrs. Dettmann on Thursday, October 29th.

Content

The students are currently learning about Matter in Mrs. James science unit. As always, please email her with any questions or concerns at ljames@k12albemarle.org.

The end of unit test will be on Friday, October 16th.

READING LOG EXPECTATIONS

Please be sure your student is turning in a signed reading log every Monday. It is a homework grade, and 120 min of reading needs to be verified by a parent weekly.

Birthday Celebrations

Every child loves to feel special that one day of the year. If you so choose, your child may share a treat with his or her classmates on or near his or her birthday. Treats are generally shared between 1:00-1:20 pm. We have no students in our classroom with food allergies. Please let me know prior to bringing in classroom treats so that we can plan accordingly.

Item Donations for STEAM Projects

We are in need of the following items for STEAM Projects. Most of the items are recyclable items from your household. Please send the items in, as you collect them. All of these materials will be used in our STEAM projects. Thank you!

  • Aluminum soda cans (rinsed and punch a hole in bottom)

Bullying Prevention - Peer Support Nomination

The Peer Support Nomination will be given during the last week of October. You can click the link below read a letter from the county about the process.

Word Study

We are continuing to review prefixes and suffixes. Each day students will be introduced to a new prefix or suffix. We will be reviewing the meaning, as well as example words that use the prefix or suffix. Students will then take the information learned to work on a Daily Word Work Google presentation. This will be a small daily task that will continue to develop and build throughout the year.

Please be aware that Mrs. Dettmann's RWS work is always due on Thursdays unless otherwise noted. Her tests are normally given on Thursdays as well.

My word study tests are given on Fridays. New sorts are introduced on Mondays.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM - Technology

The students are learning how to integrate and use technology daily to complete their assignments. They are learning how to collaborate with classmates in a virtual environment. Please be sure to review the Digital Citizenship Agreement that is in their Math binder. It is imperative that we all support and hold the children accountable to using the technology appropriately and for educational purposes only.
