The Lion's Share Newsletter

October 2021

From the Desk of Mr. Miller:

Grant Families,

The weather is finally starting to cool, leaves are changing colors, and teachers are consuming vast quantities of pumpkin spice lattes! There will also be a ton of events taking place at Grant this month that we are excited to tell you about!

We hope that October will be a great month for you and your Lion! I know great things are happening in the classrooms and around the school. As always, you are always welcome to come in and help out in the classrooms! Just remember to bring your driver's license in order to be checked in at the front office.

If you're looking for other ways to get involved here at Grant, you have a number of great opportunities this month! We hope you will join us for our APEX Fun Run and cheer on your Lion! You can stop by for some coffee and donuts during a 2nd Cup of Coffee. Also, our PTA meeting will take place here at Grant on Tuesday, Oct. 12. Finally, we are excited to have you stop by for Parent/Teacher Conferences and enjoy our Title I Family Event at the end of the month, while also checking out our book fair. As always, more information for each of these opportunities can be found below and in the calendar section of this newsletter.

Here's to October bringing you more treats than tricks!

Have a great one,

Ryan Miller

Principal, Grant Elementary

October's 2nd Cup of Coffee

Thank you for our parents that turned out to our first 2nd Cup of Coffee in September! We will host this gathering each month. We hope you can join us for our next one on Thursday, October 14 from 8:15 - 9:00 a.m. in Grant's media center. Bring your questions, ideas, and collaborative spirit and join us. Coffee and donuts will be provided!

Trunk or Treat at Grant!

On behalf of our wonderful PTA, we are excited to announce our very first Grant Trunk or Treat! Grant families, we are inviting you and your Lion(s) to join us on Friday, October 22 from 6:00-7:00 in the front parking lot. We would highly encourage our Lions (and YOU!) to dress up and join in the festivities! This should be a fun night for all!

APEX Info

Grant families, APEX is in full swing and we are so excited to have them back here at Grant! APEX is one of our biggest fundraisers for the year, but it really is so much more. Each day, our classrooms are visited by our APEX coach, Mighty Marques, to learn about leadership skills. This year's theme is, "As One." With every pledge your student earns, you are helping our both the school and PTA! This year, we are hoping to earn enough to purchase a new laminator (the currently one is on its last legs!), purchase a tee-shirt for every Lion for Field Day in the spring, and to help purchase books for our library!

Fun Run Schedule for Thursday, October 7th:

8:15 - Kinder & 1st

9:15 - 2nd & 3rd

10:15 - 4th & 5th

Lost & Found

As the weather gets colder, our lost & found becomes quite full! As you can see, we already have a number of hoodies, water bottles, and a nice lunchbox! One easy thing to do that will help us quickly return those lost items is to have your student's name written on a tag or inside of a lunchbox. Many times, we even have mix-ups with 3 students having the exact same coats! By simply putting your student's name on their item, we can reduce the number of items that are donated each year. We donate all left over items during winter break and the end of the year to Goodwill.

Student Feature

Every month, we would like to highlight one of our students! This month, we would like to introduce to you to Nathan, one of our stellar 5th grade students! Here's what he has to say about Grant and his aspirations:

What do you love most about Grant? I love how all the teachers are amazing and how there are nice kids. I don’t think I’ve had a bad teacher yet and I’ve been here since kindergarten.

What are you looking forward to as a 5th grader this year? Well, I’m happy that I’m finally a 5th grader. It comes with responsibility because the lower grades are younger and are watching you. So, you have to be good in the halls.

What do you think about Capturing Kids’ Hearts: I love that we get to learn how to be respectful of each other. We learn how to help those that are sad around us. I love the social contract and how students respect it. I love all the good things that go onto our social contract.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I always wanted to be a scientist or engineer. I would like to maybe invent stuff as a scientist.

What’s your favorite subject: I love math and the work that goes with it. Now that math is getting harder, I’m enjoying it a lot more.

What does it mean to you to be a Grant Lion? What it means to me is that as things are harder, we are all good people at Grant. There are always good kids that treat others with respect. It’s really nice.

Parent/Teacher Conferences & Title I Family Event

Our Title I Family Event and Parent/Teacher conferences are just around the corner! Soon, you will be receiving an invite from your Lion's teacher to set up your parent/teacher conference time. Here's a little info for you regarding those days:

Parent/Teacher Conferences: These will take place on Wednesday, October 27 from 3:00-7:00 and on Thursday, October 28 from 7:30-7:00. We will be offering both in-person and WebEx conferences. Stay tuned for an invite from your teacher!

Title I Family Event: This year, we hope you will join us in the gym for our annual Title I Family Event! This year's Title Event will be circus themed. Our Title I Family Event will be held at the same time as our parent/teacher conferences. There will be different stations set up for you to choose from. Each station will provide an activity or useful tools on how to best support your student at home. Also, for families that attend both the parent/teacher conference and the Title I Family Event, your Lion will be awarded a $5.00 gift card to our book fair! Simply stop by at anytime before or after your conference! There will be online access for those that are unable to join us in-person.

Mask Update

Parents & Guardians, we need to ask that you please have your student arrive to school with a mask every day. The school has been provided masks for when a student loses a mask or if a mask breaks. We also have them for when a student occasionally forgets their mask.

However, we do have a large number of students coming to the office everyday for a mask first thing in the morning. Last week, we ran out of masks and had to order 500 more. Please help us out by ensuring that your student brings their mask each day. We greatly appreciate it!
