Math Updates
In Math, we started off the week learning how to represent and interpret data on a scaled bar graph. We then began learning strategies for multiplication. We used drawings and number models to represent and solve multiplication number stories. They developed strategies from 2s, 5s, and 10s facts. Believe it or not we then began introducing some division strategies. We ended the week reviewing elapsed time.
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we discussed setting clear reading goals and how to track their progress toward those goals. Some of the goals we discussed were reading for 20 minutes each night or trying to read a certain amount of pages each night. We studied our reading logs to see what trends we were setting and then discussed how to work towards reaching our new goals.
Later on, we talked about our reading interests and how we can share our books with others. We worked with partners to help support each others reading.
Word Study
REAL Word Study starts Monday! Below is a sneak peek at the word study homework schedule!
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing, we read the story "Come On Rain" by Karen Hesse. We studied the book on how the author uses descriptive details, dialogue and actions. We talked about how writers draw readers in by telling their stories in scenes rather that summaries. We discussed how good writers sound like storytellers not news reporters. We then worked on our writing to add descriptive details, dialogue and action so that we too can sound like storytellers. We studied our writing and paused to consider what's going well in our writing and what we might try next to take our writing up a level.
