Principally Speaking
Welcome back, students and families! I am hopeful that your time away was restful and fulfilling!
During our first week back our students have been adjusting to the schedule of getting up for school again. Please encourage reasonable bedtimes. The brains of our middle schoolers are growing at a very fast rate, only surpassed by the first year of life. Adolescence is a critical time for brain growth. Significant intellectual processes are emerging. Adolescents are moving from concrete to abstract thinking and to the beginnings of metacognition (the active monitoring and regulation of thinking processes). They are developing skills in deductive reasoning, problem-solving, and generalizing. We need rested brains each day for the best learning to take place.
This week and next students will be taking the winter NWEA test. These are assessment tools that provide us a snapshot of how we are doing and how much learning has occurred from the beginning of the year. As we finalize all this feedback, I am looking forward to sharing our progress with you. Please encourage your students to give their best effort on these assessments, as they drive our instructional planning.
As always, I am honored and thankful to serve you and your students as the principal of Danville Community Middle School.

An Itchy Topic: Head Lice
In accordance with school corporation policy, we are required to share our pediculosis policy with the public on an annual basis. We have also included general information for your reading pleasure.
The main way head lice spread is from close, prolonged head-to-head contact. Head lice are crawling insects. They cannot jump, hop, or fly. There is a small chance that head lice will spread because of sharing items such as combs, brushes, and hats.
Many people have the impression that a person becomes infested with head lice because s/he is unclean. This is NOT TRUE. Frequent bathing neither prevents head lice nor eliminates the infestation.
Head lice are elongated insects and are greyish-white in color. They do not have wings nor can they jump. They do move very quickly which can make it difficult to find in a child's hair. Because they can be so hard to see, the diagnosis of head lice is often made by examining the scalp for NITS. A nit is the louse egg. It is tear-shaped and varies in color from white to yellowish-brown. Head lice attach each nit to a hair shaft in a water-proof, cement-like substance. This means they cannot be washed or brushed out of the hair or scalp like dandruff and other such particles that sometimes look like nits to the naked eye. Clusters of nits may be found in any section of the hair so a careful examination should be made of the entire scalp.
Attached is a sheet with information from the American Academy of Pediatrics about head lice and DCSC Pediculosis (head lice) Policy.
