Duncan Creek Elementary
Dear Duncan Creek Parents,
Welcome spring! We are excited to be moving into warmer weather. The school year is passing quickly. We are working diligently to maintain our focus on teaching and learning.
Please mark your calendars for these important dates:

Rolling make up testing will take place through the entire testing window which ends on May 1.
Important Information Regarding GA Milestones Testing
The GaDOE has waived the promotion/retention requirements for Grades 3, 5, and 8 for the 2014-15 school year.
There will not be any Georgia Milestone retests for the 2014-15 school year.
Reports will be produced in the fall of 2015 at the student, class, district, and state levels.
Reports will provide students’ criterion-referenced achievement designations for each content area test.
The designations will indicate the degree to which students have mastered the standards within each content area using four achievement levels.

From our PE Teachers
I cannot believe this is the third 9 weeks. This year has flown by! We are in the process of practicing for Field Day, my favorite time of year!!! Volunteer forms were sent home this week. Please consider volunteering. I really need the most help during center time, which does not last very long. We can’t run centers without our awesome volunteers. If you are afraid of missing something, then please consider volunteering on a different day than when your child participates.
We raised just under $3000 for the American Heart Association with Jump Rope for Heart. Thank you so much for all those that raised money! We also had over 100 students jump for 5 minutes which earned them a trophy. We are very proud of all of these students. The prizes arrived yesterday so I will be sending those home this week with the students who raised money.
The Pitch, Hit and Run Competition is beginning this week. This is a baseball & softball competition. If you are interested in having your child participate please send me an e-mail.
All students will have a muscle quiz coming up in the next few weeks; we have been practicing since January so they should do fine.

The Spring Book Fair was a huge success, thanks to everyone in the school community’s support. We had a very busy night during the Spring Carnival, and students enjoyed shopping during their scheduled times the following week as well. We hope this provided an opportunity for you to continue to develop a home library for your child. Thanks so much to all the PTA volunteers who worked in our book fair, and especially to Audra Brand and Carol Brattain, our PTA book fair chairpersons.
Also a reminder that students reaching their end of the year grade level goal for Accelerated Reader will be invited to attend a magic show in the media center in May. Accelerated Reader points must be earned by 3:00 PM on Friday, May 8th. We have scheduled a professional magician for the afternoon of May 13th for all students who make their annual AR goals.
Grade Level Goals
1st Grade: 20 points
2nd Grade: 30 points
3rd Grade: 50 points
4th Grade: 70 points
5th Grade: 90 points
Spring has Sprung in the art room!
With spring break almost here we have completed the art show and wonderful self portraits should have gone home last week. Kindergarten students have been learning about the artists Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet creating both collaged and watercolor creations of their own.
1st graders are currently working on literature connections with Three Blind Mice and are creating poems based on their "Bugs in a Jar".
2nd graders are working on color theory and have created Tinted Turtles and will next explore moods in art.
3rd graders are currently working on simple machines and inventing a “Homework Machine” which was inspired by Shel Silversstien’s poem. Clay “Taco Fish” are next to come!
4th and 5th graders just completed clay projects which they have been patiently awaiting, still-life paintings and drawings and city scapes will be their next projects as we come towards the end of the school year.
A variety of mediums and materials are utilized at all grade levels, and as always, the AKS were followed to guide the art curriculum. Last week a number of our students participated in the Gwinnett County Tapestry Art Exhibit held at the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee.
