FROM THE PRINCIPAL...TONY WHITE

A week later and after our first remote learning snow day of the year, here is part two of our thrilling series on grit. I've already discussed how the ability to believe I can learn anything I want to, welcoming a challenge with perseverance, and using failure as a learning experience as opposed to defeat are critical elements to possessing grit. The next elements have to do with praise, other people's success, and attitude versus abilities.

When we are praised for being smart, we believe that mistakes and failure mean we are not smart. That can lead to avoiding challenge because if I fail, I am not smart, and if I am not smart...then what am I? Who am I? This is why we need to shift to praising effort. When we praise effort, we praise the person for the process and recognize that the process shapes the person far more than the product (in most cases). Being recognized for hard work helps us own the results; however, when we are praised for being smart, it can sometimes feel like we lucked into the result.

Furthermore, when we believe our "smarts" are the result of our success, we can sometimes struggle with another person's success - even if that other person is our best friend in the whole world. We feel threatened because if my friend is smart and successful, am I? Success, joy, and contentment are not finite resources. If someone else has some, he or she is not taking mine. There's plenty to go around, and the gritty understand this.

Finally, my effort and attitude determine everything as opposed to my abilities. This is a tricky concept to understand and can lead to a slippery slope. Certainly walking into a situation with a positive attitude will not automatically guarantee a "win"...unless you take a broader perspective on what "winning" means. Winning does not necessarily mean everything going my way. A win can also come in a deeper perspective at the end of the day.

We haven't talked about it yet, but the opposite of grit is learned helplessness. We all know someone who struggles with learned helplessness. People with learned helplessness believe they are powerless when things get difficult and are paralyzed by the fear of failure. Folks with grit are the exact opposite. They seemingly can't be stopped. They have good days and bad days like anyone else, but the bad days just don't stop them.

I wish you all good days in the weekend ahead! There is a strong possibility of snow, but there is a lot of fun to be had in the snow. So, go have it with your favorite people in the world!

MIDDLE SCHOOL TRANSFERS - REQUESTS

MIDDLE SCHOOL TRANSFERS - REQUEST PERIOD OPEN FROM FEB. 1 - FEB. 26

Families who wish to submit a Middle School Transfer request may do so beginning February 1, 2021. Families must complete a separate form for each student they want to be transferred. Requests are granted based on space available. This means that siblings are not guaranteed placement. A written decision will be communicated to families before spring break.

Once the request is approved, a student may remain at that middle school throughout his or her middle school career, as long as the student resides in District 303.

Families of students granted permission to attend a school outside of their assigned attendance area are responsible for their own transportation.

Students will return to their assigned attendance area high school regardless of the middle school attended.

The Middle School Transfer request window will close at 4:00pm on February 26, 2021.

If you have questions, please contact Tammy Marsan at: 331-228-2397.
