IDENTITY And GENDER
The Exploration of A Young, Mexican Black White...Boy
Identity
I am a male that most people would call quiet but mainly it’s because I don’t know you but when I do I’m really fun. I am a son and an uncle of two. My family is not wealthy but has money to eat pay bill but also buy stuff we want as accessories. I have a middle class family my parents are separated, just me and my mother and my father in Kansas in the army. As I got older I started getting more and more depressed but now I’m getting better and everything is changing.
The duke thinks of himself as a high class person, also very wealthy. The duke thinks that he’s more royal because he’s the duke of Illyria. He feels that he has power and sometimes it gets to people. "O, she that hath a heart of that fine frame To pay this debt of love but to a brother, How will she love, when the rich golden shaft Hath killed the flock of all affections else That live in her, when liver, brain, and heart, These sovereign thrones, are all supplied, and filled Her sweet perfections with one self-king"(Act I.i.32-35).This shows that power can affect people, The duke didn’t really care that she was sad. The duke just really cared about the love he has for Olivia.
Gender
I’m a male so there for I get treated differently and have expectations as the male role model, especially if there’s a younger male in the family. As a male I am expected to teach and lead the younger male in the family onto the right road. Being the oldest male in my family takes a big role on me. Which means I have to watch what I do and also teach at the same time.
The duke is a male but sometimes he shows a feminine side of him throughout the play. The duke is very sentimental when it comes up to love and he expresses a lot through body motions and the way he’s all over the place in the play. In the play as a male he is forced to act like the manly guy because of the position that he is I being the duke of Illyria. Saying that he thinks he’s a powerful male and takes that to his advantage. The benefits of the duke being a male is he has more opportunity to do stuff back then more than a female would have.
Perception
People see me as a middle class, they see the cloths I wear shoes and other accessories. I also live in an apartment just because it’s hard to be paying for a house with a single mother. People think I’m different just because I don’t talk that much but it’s just really that I don’t really talk to people I don’t know. Sometimes people see me as a normal kid but really I can be fun to be with.
People view the duke as a powerful man because he’s the duke of Illyria, saying that he has some respect in Illyria. They see the Duke as a high class man because of how he’s dresses and in the position of being the duke of Illyria. They also think of him as a wealthy person, and that’s one of the reasons why Viola wanted to work for him because people know he’s respected and is wealthy. I think it’s similar to how he sees himself because he knows that he’s in a higher class then most and that gets to his head. For an example him trying to get with Olivia if he was in a lower class he would not have even tried. Saying that he sees he has power so when he does tried to get with Olivia he doesn’t really care that shes sad he just wants to be with her. “Who governs here? A noble duke, in nature as in name"(Act i.ii.20-23). This quote proves that the Duke is the ruler has power of Illyria and is respected and known.
