Terrific Trees!

TREES!!
This week we started exploring about trees, I can truly say that trees fascinate children and spark their curiosity and wonder. We haven't started investigating yet, and I can see every child so engaged and interested in learning more about trees! As we do for every study unit when we start, we ask What do we know about trees? What do we want to find out? I was amazed with their answers, as they knew ALOT, and our investigation web was filled with interesting ideas. We of course went on a tree hunt earlier in the week, and we loved collecting different sizes of leaves, and branches.
Each center in our classroom were enriched with tree related objects. The dramatic center was turned into a forest full of trees, and animals that live in trees! In the block center, we provided scissors, green construction paper, tape, and pencils. Children used their own imagination and creativity to make leaves with the construction paper and taped it to long rectangle blocks that were used as the trunk. Our play-dough center was a great center, as children got to make their own tree sculpture. We provided special tree blocks and real leaves in the toys and games center. Our library center was filled with amazing tree books. Our discovery center, we had different pieces of the tree, like tree rings, piece of trunk, bark, branches, pinecones etc. The writing center had various picture/word cards such as part of the trees, and they enjoyed writing them down in their writing notebook. Magnetic letters were also provided, in order to build the words on our board!
This is just the beginning, and we have done ALOT! Next week we will start with our investigations that will offer children an opportunity to learn more about the characteristics of trees and the role they play in our environment. Children will also be learning about the creatures that inhabit trees, and the food trees produce. Like always, each investigation helps our children explore and strengthen their skills in literacy, math, technology, and the arts.
