A Visit from a Master Gardener!

Wednesday of this week, we had Liza Frydenlund come in to speak to our 2nd graders. She taught us all about the life cycle of an annual and compared it to the life cycle of a perennial! It was so fun to learn from a real plant expert!

We made bird feeders!

This past week we paired up with Mrs.Sieman's class and the students made bird feeders! We researched what types of bird feeders that we wanted to make, made a plan and wrote down what supplies we needed. Then we started creating! Today we hung them with yarn outside our classroom window! It will be so fun to watch the birds enjoy our creations this spring!

Students are brainstorming and researching different ways to build a bird feeder!!

Math:

We will begin our study of geometry. We will be studying a shapes flat surfaces, vertices, and edges, relating plane shapes to solid figures, and making new shapes from existing shapes.
Writing:

We are working SO hard on wrapping up our young author books and working on our final drafts! The class has done such an amazing job on these. I am so excited for the students to share them at our upcoming Pancake Breakfast!
Science:

2nd Graders at Thorpe Creek Elementary will be issued a challenge to reduce, recycle and reuse. Students will be asked to think like a scientist in order to design a tool that meets a specific need. The materials for the tool MUST be reusable. We will focus on this for the remainder of the year!

Word Study:

Word study in 2nd grade includes spelling, phonics, and vocabulary development. We will be focusing on 15 new vocabulary words. Those words are: reduce, reuse, recycle, engineer, design, environment, pollution, hazardous waste, compost, landfill, biodegradable, energy, disposable, and conservation.
