Community Career Speakers Wanted

At North, we are looking to find ways to help students understand the different jobs in the local community, how they can get into those jobs, and how every job is necessary to help our community thrive. We are wanting community members to come speak and answer questions about their jobs with students for about 30 minutes.

We would be honored if you would share your career path with our students. Please fill out this form and someone from North will contact you to finalize the details with you. Thank you for taking the time to help our North Start students!

If you have any questions, please contact John Peters at: John Peters @d303.org

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! COME CLOSER…. AND TAKE A PEEK AT OUR SPOOKTACULARLY SCARY BOOKS!

Its that time of year for ghosties and goblins and things that go bump in the night, so find a quiet corner and settle in with one of our creepy horror stories. Slasher Girls & Monster Boys Stories Selected By April Genevieve Tucholke “Readers will most likely be haunted by the creepy, haunting March Hare in Carrie Ryan’s blood-soaked “In the Forest Dark and Deep.” Even the son of Mephistopheles himself makes an eerie appearance in the guise of a hot hipster boy. Each installment references its inspiration at the end; these include classic tales, films, and songs—even some Nirvana lyrics. The anthology includes many standouts, but a fair handful come off as half-baked, confusing, or both. Readers should take warning not to get too close to any of the characters here, as many of their life hours are shorter than their respective stories’ page counts. Gross, creepy fun.” Read a full review at KirkusReviews

Satan’s Prep By Gabe Guarente “Playing his premise for all it's worth, Guarente fills the halls of St. Lucifer’s Academy for the Hopeless and Damned with heavy-lidded teen dead and demons. There, the former serve as lab subjects in dissection class, are forced to watch sex-ed films featuring their own parents and otherwise endure like high-pain activities. For Trevor, the thick protective shells of ennui and self-loathing that he brought with him after being electrocuted by a crappy guitar amp begin to break down when slavering vice principal Cerberus promises a transfer to Purgatory if he can pull his “soul point average” up past 3.0 (it’s currently negative 2.8 billion). But then leaving starts to look less attractive when hot new goth student Persephone Plumm shows signs of interest. Hellishly hilarious.” Read the full review at KirkusReviews

American Fantastic Tales: Terror and the Uncanny from Poe to the Pulps Edited By Peter Straub

“Editor Straub’s first volume gathers tales that express the sense of “instability” that developed from the erosion of the 18th-century faith in reason and essential human goodness, resulting in an implicit consensus of doubt and fear. Standard classic stories from such masters as Poe, Hawthorne, Ambrose Bierce, Henry James and Edith Wharton are inevitably and rightfully displayed. (Wharton’s “Afterward” is magnificent.) But many readers will be most intrigued by several truly impressive sleepers. Among the best of these are Harriet Spofford’s deliciously ironic “The Moonstone Mass”; Sarah Orne Jewett’s understated, dialogue-driven “In Dark New England Days”... A terrific must-have collection!” Read the full review at KirkusReviews
