Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers

We've finally made it to the end of a long term. It's been a successful term with pupils excelling in all sorts of ways both in school and out. It has been great to hear about our pupils who have been selected for county and national competitions in various sports, and it has been wonderful to see so many of our pupils showcasing their musical talents in the various performances that we have held so far this year. I must publicly thank all of the staff who give their time, week in week out, regardless of the weather, to give extra opportunities for our pupils. We are currently offering over 50 extra curricular clubs per week, which is a staggering offer for any school.

Our school, like many others, is struggling to cope with staff absences currently, and we are working our hardest to prevent any disruption to our pupils' education. We are particularly short of staffing in our admin team at the moment, so I must apologise if you are struggling to get through to the office or it is taking us longer than usual to return phone calls; we hope to have this situation rectified as soon as possible in the new year and we appreciate your patience in the meantime.

Many thanks for your continuing support - it is very much appreciated.

Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Regards

David Godfrey

Fundraising in School

On Friday 4th November Valley Gardens supported the organisation Tin on a Wall by collecting non-perishable food and other essentials to support local charities including food banks. Thanks to the generosity of all of you 222.25kgs was collected which is the equivalent of 1 and a half panda bears! An amazing achievement and one that will support lots of people who are struggling this Christmas. You should all be very proud. To find out more information about the charity and how to become a volunteer please visit https://tinonawall.co.uk/, maybe you could start doing it on your street/estate.

Children in Need raised £692.

Project Based Learning

Y5 Eco-Project

Half of Year 5 have been working on an eco-project this term and have been involved in lots of activities including a beach clean and a workshop from volunteers from St Mary's Lighthouse Nature Reserve.

Y6 Enterprise-Project

Year 6 Enterprise PBL sold Christmas cards & treats - all funds raised are to be used for the end of year celebrations!

Y7 Sustainability-Project

This term in our Year 7 sustainability project, we have learned about what it means to be sustainable. We have explored renewable energy resources, enjoyed a visit from Tom Nightingale from Equinor who told us all about how the new wind farm at Dogger bank will help towards future sustainable energy in the UK. We have made our own coin batteries and tested them, designed and modelled energy efficient homes for the future and made info-graphics to detail different ways to live sustainable and why this is important.

Y7 Crest Award Project

This term, two of our PBL groups in Year 7 have been working towards their Bronze Crest Award. They were challenged with the STEM question 'what makes a bath bomb fizzy?'

The Bronze Crest Award introduces pupils to project work, empowering them to work like real scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.

Street Science Year 8

We have had an unprecedented uptake for our street science group this year. Our fantastic Year 8 street scientists have shown incredible initiative and independence in planning, preparing and delivering their exciting sessions to the Year 5 classes. Their activities have included everything from making crystals and setting off pop rockets, to making ooblek and investigating electrostatics. They have been developing their skills in science communication and enthusing the next generation of scientists. Well done Street scientists of 2022/23!

Germany Trip 03rd-09th December 2022

Trip reviews from pupils:

I think the best part of the Germany trip was the Christmas Markets as we could practice our German and explore the culture through shops and food. I also really enjoyed Phantasialand as there were a variety of areas from around the world. All of the people were very friendly. It was a lovely place to stay.

Thank you for taking us! We are very grateful!

Recently I have been lucky enough to be nominated to go on the Germany trip. Whilst on the trip I have learnt some very strong life skills and had a very memorable experience. My favourite part of the trip was speaking German to all of the vendors at the Christmas Markets. Everyone was really nice and helpful. The boys in the room were very kind when I was feeling unwell. One of the best experiences was going to the Schokoladenmuseum where we got to see how the chocolate was made.

Hanukkah Pupil-led Assembly

Y5 & Y6 had a fascinating assembly on Hanukkah, created and delivered by 3 of our wonderful Y6 students. Everyone listened respectfully and learned lots about this Jewish festival.

Islam Parent-led Assembly

Year 7 had a fantastic assembly from Mrs Rahman. They learned about Islam, her beliefs and how her religion impacts her daily life. Fascinating stuff and many interesting questions were asked at the end!

STEM Careers

A group of our Year 8 pupils had the opportunity to visit the Newcastle Foundation building where they experienced a hands-on STEM Careers experience. Pupils learned about what the different STEM strands stand for and looked at possible careers in each of these areas. Pupils then went on to use Sphero Robots, where they used core skills needed in the STEM industries.

Dance Leaders

Shout out to two of our amazing young people, Imogen and Freya in Year 7. These girls have shown tremendous responsibility and kindness in leading the KS2 dance club for a member of staff and helping them prepare for a festival in the new year.

Team GB - Roller Hockey

Huge congratulations to Jacob and Nathan in Y7 who have been selected to represent Team GB at Roller Hockey in Barcelona in April 2023

Swimming Achievement

Well done to Thomas (and all the other VGMS swimmers) who competed at the North East Regional Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield last weekend. A fantastic achievement to reach this level of competition.

Class Christmas Song Competition

Big picture
Our annual Christmas Song Competition gets better every year. It was a festive fun morning for all involved. The children performed so well and some songs really excelled with their own lyrics included, musicians playing instruments and dance moves! (Some even brought chocolate bribes for the Grinch.)

Snow is falling all around...

Christmas Musical - Hosanna Rock!

Big picture
Huge congratulations to year 5 who performed in our Christmas musical, Hosanna Rock. Every child in the year group took part in the performances that were shared with parents and carers just a few days before Christmas. The characters and narrators were wonderful, our dancers brilliant, the recording playing was fantastic and the singing was simply amazing!

Well done and thank you to all the children and staff who helped make the performance such a huge success.

Thanks also to all who donated to help fund future performing arts projects.

Rehearsals

Epraise Morning

Once again it has been delightful to see our pupils spending their epraise points on a selection of different activities during our termly epraise day. This event is always enjoyable for pupils and staff and we love seeing happy smiling faces on these days. We have many pupils who still have points to spend and in the New Year there will be a selection of treats in the epraise shop for them to spend these on, or they may want to save them for the next epraise day in the spring term.

Pantomime Trip - Dick Whittington

Year 5 spent their last afternoon of the term watching Dick Whittington at The Exchange, North Shields. They absolutely loved it and we think the audience participation could be heard back at school!

Scottish National Ballet

We will be running two trips to the Newcastle Theatre Royal next year to see the Scottish National Ballets performance of The Snow Queen and Matthew Bournes Sleeping Beauty.

Friends of Valley Gardens

FOVG activity for this term involved a Halloween Disco for Years 5 and 6; a Christmas Disco for Years 7 and 8; and a Christmas Movie Night for Years 5 and 6, where they watched the classic film, “Elf”. We finished off the fundraising activities with our Grand Christmas Raffle, with 15 Prizes in total that were won and a lucky Year 6 pupil won the 1st Prize – a Playstation 5!

We’ve raised just over £3,000 this term and will spend this money to improve the school, either improving facilities and or technology to benefit all children attending the school.

We hope we’ve given the children some fun memories attending these events. We’d like to thank you for your continued support and look forward to hosting more events in the new Year.

Thanks to all our FoVG volunteers and teachers!

We are always looking for volunteers to help out with events, so if you are interested in becoming part of FOVG could you please contact Amber on 07944 558322.
