Grandview’s Adopt-a-GRANDparent
Beginning this December 2023, students will have the opportunity to spend a little time with some GRANDparents in our very own library!
WHAT? 1-on-1 time for a student to spend time with a caring adult in the library; reading, coloring, doing a puzzle, playing a game, or just talking and being heard with kindness.
WHO? Individual students who are chosen by their classroom teacher who would benefit on this type of interaction
WHY? …because people need to connect with others! What a great opportunity to build our community of learners at every age!
WHEN? 15-20 minute groups during a 3-hour window on Tuesday mornings.
WHERE? Grandview’s Limitless Library!
HOW? Classroom teachers sign up students who will benefit from this opportunity. Students will then receive a ticket to come to the library with a designated date/time.
VOLUNTEER!
We are always looking for volunteer GRANDparents! If you know of someone interested in volunteering for this incredible opportunity, have them contact Laura at laura.sapinoro@weldre4.org or 970-686-2380.
FAQ for GV’s Adopt-a-GRANDparent
Here are the nuts and bolts to answer your frequently-asked-questions about volunteering as a GRANDparent!
● Do I need a background check, or can I just go through the RAPTOR system when I come to Grandview?
- The first time you come to Grandview, you will need to check in through the RAPTOR system in the front office. Simply provide your driver’s license and we will do the rest! On this first visit, Kate (our library aide) will assist you in completing the online background check application; there will be no cost to you…Grandview will cover the cost.
● What am I going to do while I’m volunteering as a GRANDparent?
- You will come on down to the GV library, and 1-3 students at a time will join you! During this time you might play a game, chat, do a puzzle, read a book, etc. You do not have to plan anything; a variety of activities will be available for you in the library.
● Will I be in charge of a lot of students for a long time?
- You will be working with 1-3 students at a time. Each group will be with you for 15 minutes.
● I am a busy person; do I have to volunteer for three hours each Tuesday, or can I adjust as I need to?
- We value our volunteers, and recognize that people are busy. If you are able to join us for only an hour on a Tuesday morning, please do so! We are happy to accommodate your availability.
● How are students chosen to come spend time with me?
- Students are chosen for all sorts of reasons, knowing that the main goal is to make the most of the opportunity to get to know older and younger people. Teachers will nominate the students who will be coming to you.
● How will parents know that their child is participating?
- Parents will receive an email to let them know that their child will be participating.
