1. Prevention Vs. Inaction
Place these two lines in your think tank:
- The purpose of life is to live life with purpose.
- The meaning of life is to find real meaning in this life.
Sounds simple enough? In idea sure, but it's a little more challenging in practice.
In Shane's book club last Friday, one of the key points we discussed was the word proactive. It's the 1st principle from Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Being proactive sets the stage for all other life practices. I think you know where this conversation is leading, prevention vs. inaction.
To jump back into the two statements above that are swirling around in your think tank, we are to live this life with purpose(s), and to operate with real meaning. The kind of personal meaning that brings fulfillment. Each of us have our own renditions of what our purposes are and what will bring real meaning in our lives. The key is to discover it, operate in it, partner with compatible others, and rock this life!
Wellness is a personal responsiblity first, then a corporate one. When we take action for our own wellness, we find deeper purpose and meaning. We water our soul as we sweat out toxins. For example:
- We improve our hormones and place stronger chemistry in our brain as we exercise.
- We fuel our energy as we eat clean. We stabilize our insulin as we watch the sugar intake and balance our macros.
- We close more deals if we get good sleep.
- We think more clearly as we discover ways to calm our mind.
- We free ourselves from extra burden when we are profitable thru strategic planning.
- We bring about peace of mind as we actually go for those check ups & doctor visits.
For the next few weeks, we will be diving more into prevention vs. inaction. Here are some great thoughts to kick-off with. Think of the consequences if you do nothing...
- According to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health, 60% of colon cancer cases might have been prevented earlier with screening.
- If the smoker does nothing, it will take an average of 15 years off of life.
- The chance for heart disease increases by 60% if the sedentary does nothing. Obesity, heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes and hypertension are linked to a sedentary lifestyle.
- According to a poll of nearly 6,300 people by the Institute for Medicine and Public Health, we spend nearly 56 hours a week at the computer/phone screen, working the steering wheel, or being a chair potato in front of the TV.
- If your cholesterol is high and you do nothing, you will experience plaque build up in your arteries, and increase your risk of heart attack or stroke.
- If you have high blood pressure and you do nothing, you will experience damage to your arteries & brain.

1. What types of training do you prefer?
I prefer mostly HIIT training and weight lifting. I feel this type of training has benefited me most in my journey. With the HIIT training I can really tell a difference in fat loss and the weight training has given me definition I have never seen before. Before these two types of training I was mostly a runner/cardio advocate so this change has helped me meet my fitness goals the best.
2. How has having the Coliseum at work made a difference for you?
The Coliseum has been a lifesaver. With the flexibility of working out before work or during a lunchbreak, I have been able to stay more consistent with my routine. The Coliseum trainers and staff are such a joy to be around and I look forward to my workouts with the energy they bring!
3. What encouragement would you give other associates on accomplishing their health and fitness goals?
To be sure to schedule time for yourself each day; literally put it on your calendar. Make an appointment to take a workout class, walk, or meditate/yoga; our well-being is so important, not only for our families but for work too. Take one day at a time; every day might not be perfect. If you slip up on your diet or exercise give yourself grace and start again tomorrow. Keep your eye on what your ultimate goal is and I promise you will get there. If you need help getting started The Coliseum trainers and nutritionist can help tailor a workout/nutrition plan specifically for you!
