Principal's Message

Twin Oak Elementary Families,

It is my hope that this newsletter finds you and your family healthy and happy!

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the staff at Twin Oak Elementary, our students, and our families. The start of the school year can often be difficult in terms of transitions. However, all of the aforementioned have come together to make the start of the school year a huge success. Thank you!

I would also like to specifically thank our PTO and Mrs. Heather Barbour as they have started preparing for the Twin Oak Elementary Fit-A-Thon. As always, I am excited to see our students participate in activities that promote well-being and physical fitness.

In partnership with the Ohio State University's SNAP-Ed program and Community Roots, Twin Oak Elementary has been the recipient of several grants to help expand our outdoor education programming. In particular, we will look to expand the number of raised beds to allow more students to become involved in the process of experiential learning with alignment to the Learning Standards.

As you continue to follow all of the wonderful things that are happening at Twin Oak Elementary, please feel free to follow us on Twitter at @TOSocialMVCSD.

A Note From Mrs. Sims

Big picture

After taking a workshop this summer on how to empower girls in relationships, academics, social media and careers, I learned that girls have less confidence in their abilities when choosing a career in the sciences in particular. That surprised me! As I was researching to improve my science activities, I came across a high school teacher who had her high school seniors always wear lab coats when doing experiments. This teacher said that her students loved doing that and always took science seriously when they dressed the part. This idea led me to pursue how to get lab coats for all of fifth grade. Women United reached out to me after hearing about my idea and provided a grant that would fund the lab coats. My grant was approved and the lab coats have arrived! I'm so excited to have my students dress the part of a scientist. Hopefully this sparks an interest in careers in science.

Counselor's Corner

We’re at the end of our first full month of school! With the start of the school year, there are many new students and I’d like to welcome each one of the new families to Twin Oak! New students will get to join me for a group lunch to ensure they feel welcome and a sense of belonging at school. Whether you’re new to Twin Oak or have had children here for years, I’m here to help students and their families have a great experience at Twin Oak. I care about education but also care deeply about the overall wellbeing for each of our students. I long to connect with you and help with whatever needs may arise as the year evolves.

If you’d like to hear more about who I am and how I can help your student, please join me for “Coffee With the Counselor!” This year, we get to hang out in person and you will get to connect with other families. I will be happy to answer any questions you might have and provide you with any links to resources you may need! I will also be touching on the popular topic of bullying, going into October which is antibullying prevention month. I will be addressing the most popular questions:

  • What is bullying?

  • How does Twin Oak handle bullying issues?

  • What do I do if my child is being bullied or is a bully to others?

Please join us for “Coffee With the Counselor” and enjoy free coffee and donuts on Friday, October 7 at 9am. Can’t wait to see you!
