Sports and Entertainment Management Class Give Back!
Written by Samantha Booher, grade 11:
To coincide with this year’s NFL Super Bowl game, the students in the Sports and Entertainment Management classes at Canon Mac High School worked hard to create a lineup of events and a canned food drive called the “Souper Bowl of Giving”. The students created two boxes, one decorated in black and orange for the Bengals, and the other will be blue and yellow for the Rams. These boxes were placed in the cafeteria and students were encouraged to place their donated can of soup or canned good in the box of the team they thought would win the Super Bowl.
Along with these donations, daily themes were announced to the school to spread a little kindness and happiness into the environment. Monday was a fun day called Team day/Meme day in which students wore their favorite team jersey or team apparel.. Fun memes were placed all around the school, in the hopes of making students smile.. Tuesday was called “Twosday Tuesday,” as students twinned with one of their friends. Students were encouraged to thank their friends and others by treating a friend to a snack at the MacMart in the cafeteria. For the middle of the week, Wednesday gave students an extra boost of motivation, called “Wonderful Wednesday”, Students were encouraged to wear inspirational shirts, and small post-it note messages were placed around the school to remind the students that they’re doing great. For Top-It-Off Thursday, students were permitted to wear their favorite hat with the donation of a canned good or can of soup. Finally, to end the week on a high note, Fan-Fare Friday started with a bang! Students wore their blue and gold Canon Mac gear, as the band marched the hallway in the morning, adding some music and excitement to the end of a long week!
At the end of the day on Friday, an announcement was made about who the students predicted to win the Super Bowl based on their canned donations. This was a fun week, spreading positivity and raising food for a great cause, the Canonsburg Food Pantry!

Mock Trial Club
This past month, the students in the Mock Trial Club prepared prosecution, defense, and witness testimonies for the fictional case of the Commonwealth vs. Acaro, a murder trial investigating the death of Jonathan Pollard.
Students crafted their part in each aspect of the case, worked with Mr. Zupancic to perfect their questioning, and ultimately participated in a competition against two local schools.

Ms. Rachel Berteotti
Last month, Ms. Berteotti showed her 10th grade classes how inferences, imagery, and theme develop as students age. She had her students collaborate with a preschool class in Ohio to compose stories for the wordless picture book, The Flower Man. Her students wrote a story for each page of the book and met with the preschool class via Goggle Meet to share their stories. The students were so excited to see the preschoolers' reactions, and the preschoolers were excited to share what they had created with high school students.
Bridging the gap of age and location, Ms. Berteotti's collaborative assignment promoted students to make inferences, practice interpreting and applying imagery, and write creatively. While the ages of the students were different, both stories contained similar themes.
Curious about The Flower Man? Grab a copy of the book and see how you interpret it! Check out Ms. Berteotti's class interpretations of the wordless book below!

Attendance and Early Dismissal Procedures
Attendance:
If a student is not seated in their first period classroom by 7:45, they will be considered absent (shown as IUn in PowerSchool.) Prior to the end of 2nd period, an attendance rollover will take place and those students still marked as absent will be marked absent for all 9 class periods. That evening you will receive both a phone call and an email from our BlackBoard messaging system alerting you of your child’s absence. Please send them in with an excuse within three 3 days of their last absence. You can either provide us with a parent note, an email or you can fill out an absence excuse found here: https://www.formality.io/v/uJ2tm9C. Parent notes can be placed in absence excuse bin in Student Affairs Office. Each student is allocated 15 absences before a doctor’s excuse is required.
If your child is going to be entering the building late, they must first go through the Student Affairs Office to receive a late pass. Please provide your student with an excuse. Acceptable forms are a parent note, doctor's excuse, email or an online form submission found here: https://www.formality.io/v/AW8mOPbmC. If they enter with an excuse, their absence will be changed to an excused tardy (TEx.) If they do not have an excuse, they will be entered as tardy unexcused (TUn.) If your child is marked as tardy unexcused, that evening you will receive both a phone call and email from our BlackBoard messaging system alerting you of their tardy. Each student is allocated 4 tardies per semester (parent note or online submission) before a doctor's excuse is required. Disciplinary action will be taken for excessive tardies.
Early Dismissals:
If your student will need to leave the building prior to the end of the school day (2:40pm), you must provide them with an early dismissal note. This can be a parent note, email or online submission found here: https://www.formality.io/v/i1GhkeV. All early dismissals require BOTH written and verbal confirmation. Please call Mrs. Lucia in the Office of Student Affairs (724-745-1400, ext. 5009), BY 9:00am to confirm you child’s early dismissal. Once both forms are received, a pass will be sent to your child and they may leave at the time of their dismissal. If you are picking your student up, they will meet you outside, if they are a driver, they are free to leave and drive themselves. If you choose, you can come into the main office to sign your student out. No student will be permitted to leave until both forms of confirmation are received. All early dismissals will be entered as ER in PowerSchool. If your child has medical documentation for their early release, please provide us with this information and we will change their ER to a medical early release (MER.) Medical early releases are not counted in attendance reports. Students who leave the building without an early dismissal pass will be marked IUn and considered absent from class and disciplinary action can be taken.
Mrs. Lucia can be reached by email at luciam@cmsd.k12.pa.us and by phone at 724-745-1400, ext. 5009.
