Fifth Grade Newsletter

December 6, 2015

Dear Parents:

Here's what's happening at school this week.

English

We are continuing our Project for Awesome this week. Students have been researching charities and learning about persuasive writing. They are going to be revising their writing this week and then creating videos to highlight the organization they chose.

We are also practicing the Spelling Bee words; each student has a list. Class spelling bees will take place December 17. The school-wide bee is scheduled for mid- January.

Video Lesson

Journalist and photographer Eric Ingles visited the class last week to teach us how to make great videos. We learned about establishing shots, backgrounds, and matching the picture to the story. We will use our new skills in our charity video projects.

Social Studies

Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday in social studies. Students have their vocabulary words to study. They also will make a study sheet on Monday to help them review.

In case they forgot to bring any of this home, the vocabulary words are: empire, vegetation region, Islam, Muslim, griot, savanna, tropical rainforest, archaeology, artifacts, oral history.

Math

On Monday, we will be reviewing for our unit test on division. Originally, we planned on having the test on Monday. Instead, we will have a full day of review on Monday, followed by a test on Tuesday. Later this week, we will start unit 4 on algebraic concepts. Students will learn about the order of operations this week.

Science

We will be working on some Science Vocabulary activities as well as wrapping up the photosynthesis process. There will be no homework this week.

Specials

Mrs. Garver's Class: Art

Mrs. Muladore's Class: Library/Tech

Santa's Secret Shop

We will be visiting Santa's Secret Shop on Thursday this week. Envelopes were sent home last week for those families that wish to participate.

Christmas Party

Watch for an email from Jane through Sign Up Genius asking for donations to our planned Hot Chocolate Bar. We are also looking for wrapped gifts of a $1 value, such as chapstick, packs of gum, or other inexpensive items for a gift exchange game.

Sincerely,

The Fifth Grade Team
