Introduction to genetics
By Nathaniel Allen
Basic vocabulary of genetics.
Homozygous-The two alleles for a trait that are the same.
Heterozygous-the two alleles for a trait that are different.
Dominant-the allele that masks or hides the recessive allele.
Recessive-the allele that is masked or hidden by the dominant allele.
“How can someone predict the traits of offspring?”
By using punnet squares and genetic information that has already been discovered.
Why is it important to study the principles of inheritance (how traits are passed on to offspring)?
So that we can see what the offspring will look like as well as determine if they will have a disease or disorder.
