Adapt for Life Program in our Schools
In partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Sycamore Community Schools was awarded state funding to develop mental health programming for students. The grant that we received in the spring of 2021 expands the Adapt for Life Program for grades K-12. We launched the program in our schools this week.
Aligned with our PBIS framework, the Adapt for Life Program features ten lessons throughout the school year. The ADAPT framework—Ask, Describe, Assess, Plan, and Talk—is a model to help students develop healthy behaviors and essential life skills to tackle stress, whether it’s during everyday moments or in times of crisis.
Beginning the week of November 8, classroom teachers will teach lessons in grades K-4 and grades 11-12. In grades 5-10, students will experience lessons with the classroom teachers and trained facilitators from the Adapt for Life team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Lessons teach students how to better manage everyday stress through developing healthier habits and skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
This grant is part of Governor Mike DeWine’s K-12 Prevention Education Initiative, which awarded $18 million to school districts in Ohio through their mental health partners. Sycamore Schools was one of 11 districts in Hamilton County to receive a one-time grant to create sustainable evidence-based mental health programming.
We are excited to be engaging in this exciting partnership with Adapt for Life. For more information about the program, tools for students, and tools for families, please visit the Adapt for Life website at https://www.adaptforlife.org. Should you have questions regarding Adapt for Life, please reach out to Lisa Zelvy, Pupil Services Supervisor, at zelvyl@sycamoreschools.org.

Illness-related Dismissal Advisory
The school health team monitors many different types of illness this time of year. We have been seeing many students for cold-like symptoms. At this time, we also have active COVID cases in the community. We ask that please direct your son or daughter to the nurses office prior to pick up. The nurse will contact you about illness and dismissal policies. Thank you very much for your assistance!
FAST FOOD DELIVERIES AT SCHOOL
Thank you for abiding by this rule.
What is "PUFFS"
For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.
The New York Times proclaims PUFFS, "A FAST-PACED ROMP through 'Seven increasing eventful years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.' For POTTERphiliacs who grew up alongside Potter and are eager to revisit that world, "PUFFS' exudes a jovial winking fondness for all things Harry!"

2021-22 Testing Schedule
AP Exam Information 2021 - 2022
As we begin the 2021-2022 school year, we are focused on keeping you up to date about AP exams. Under College Board, the 2022 AP exams will be given in the traditional format of paper & pencil throughout a two week testing period. There will only be one testing window and one test format for the 2022 AP exams. All AP students must create an online account in College Board in order to join the classroom for each AP course they are enrolled in. If a student wants to take the AP exam in May, they MUST click “Yes” for the AP exam in their online College Board account. The AP Exam Registration Window will be from August 23, 2021 - October 29, 2021. The cost of each exam is $96.00, including the processing fee. Your online College Board exam sign up, as well as your Parent Portal payment indicates a commitment to take the AP exam. Any student who signs up to take the test and decides to withdraw from an exam is subject to an unused exam charge and is required to fill out an AP exam opt out form. If a student registers after the deadline, a late registration fee/late payment fee of $40.00 will be applied to the initial AP exam cost. The late registration deadline is January 28, 2022, NO EXCEPTIONS. A few additional important points about AP testing:
AP exam registration is only available to students who click “YES” via College Board online classroom.
AP payment is only available via Parent Portal.
Sycamore does not offer all AP exams, however, a student may register to take the exam at another school. Your student is responsible for making those arrangements to take the AP exam at another school.
Please contact Adrienne Sanders (sandersa@sycamoreschools.org) or Jane Ghantous (ghantousj@sycamoreschools.org ) with any questions.
AP Exam Registration Window: August 23, 2021 - October 29, 2021
AP Exam Cost: $96.00 per exam
Late Registration: October 30, 2021 - January 28, 2022
Charge of Late Registration for AP Exam: $136.00 per exam
2021/2022 SENIOR CLASS IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Dear Sycamore Families,
I want to make sure that you are aware of the immunization requirements for the senior class of 2022. In Ohio, the following vaccines are required by law:
12th-grade students must show proof that they have received (2) doses of MCV4 unless the initial dose was given on or after the 16th birthday . This requirement must be met NO LATER THAN THE 14th day of attendance at school for the 2021-2022 school year.
I encourage you to check with your physician to verify that your teen is up-to-date on immunizations now and/or to schedule an appointment as early as possible if your teen's vaccine status must be updated. If your teen is up-to-date with vaccines, please ask for an immunization summary. You may send a photocopy of the record via email or have the healthcare provider fax a copy to me. Please contact me by email if you are experiencing any difficulties in obtaining the vaccine.
For more information about Ohio’s required school vaccinations and waiver options, please refer to the following links: https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/know-our-programs/Immunization/Required-Vaccines-Child-Care-School/Required-Vaccines-Child-Care-School
I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Ferris, RN, BSN, NCSN
