February News
Kenneth J. Tice Elementary
Principal's Points!
Welcome to the month of February! We are moving full speed ahead and teachers are working hard preparing your child for the next grade level and end of year assessments; and we need your help. Please make sure that you are checking your child’s backpack each day for homework and other important papers. I also encourage you to set a specific time each day for you and your child to complete homework and to read daily. We also have important information on our Tice webpage of educational sites that can help your child learn new skills or to help reinforce skills they are learning at school. If you need additional resources to help your child at home, please contact your child’s teacher for support.
I would also like to bring to your attention the concern we are having with morning car rider arrival. If your child arrives to school, he or she must be dropped at 7:00 am or later. Dropping your child off before 7:00 am when no one is on duty is dangerous. We are asking for your cooperation and for you to help us keep your child safe while at school. Please remember that when you drop your child off before adult supervision is present you are risking your child’s safety.
As always, we look forward to collaborating with our parents for a monthly activity! This month we look forward to your family joining us for our annual health fair on February 9th from 4-6 pm. Come out and learn health and safety tips from various community organizations.

Mrs. Flynn- School Counselor
February's character education theme for the month is responsibility. Responsibility is doing your part at home, in the community, at school or at work. When you are responsible you do your chores, homework, and clean up after yourself. The counselor will have lunch with students who show responsibility this month and are nominated by their teachers.
This month is also Random Acts of Kindness. Each day we will focus on one thing each of us can do to make the world a brighter place.
College and Career Spotlight
The college spotlight for the month is Sam Houston State University. The career spotlight is on Business and Industry. The two careers that we will focus on are mechanic work and construction.
Tice Science Corner...Making Science Fun
Here at Tice, our teachers do their best to make science interesting and fun! Below is a quick activity that you can do at home with your child. As you both are working through this experiment, reinforce the scientific method that they are learning and using at school. Scientific Method: Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data, and Conclusion.
Why Leaves Change Color
You will need: small jar, cover for jars or plastic wrap, rubbing alcohol, coffee filter, shallow pan, hot tap water, plastic knife or spoon
Collect 2-3 large leaves from the same tree type. Tear, chop and place in jar.
Cover leaves with alcohol. Chop and grind the leaves in the alcohol.
Cover jar loosely and set jar in 1 inch warm water.
Keep the jar in the water for at least a half-hour, longer if needed, until the alcohol has become colored (the darker the better). Twirl the jar gently about every five minutes.
Cut a long thin strip of coffee filter paper. Remove the jar from the water and uncovered. Place a strip of filter paper into the jar so that one end is in the alcohol. Bend the other end over the top of the jar and secure it with tape.
The alcohol will travel up the paper, bringing the colors with it. After 30-90 minutes the colors will travel up the paper as the alcohol evaporates and Voila! See what happens!
