"What's Going On In Our World"
Mrs. Sadler's 5th grade class
October 5, 2017
Mathematician's Corner
As mathematicians we have been focusing on Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is centered around adding and subtracting decimals. Chapter 5 fits perfectly after Chapter 1 because students need to understand Place Value in order to be able to add and subtract decimals effectively. This week we focused on rounding decimals, and adding decimals using base ten blocks, models, and the standard algorithm. Next week, we will focus on subtracting decimals by using base ten blocks, models, and the standard algorithm.
Here are some math websites that students can practice and use at home. Usernames and Passwords should be written down inside of agendas.

Question to ask Students during Discussions about Math
- How can I use place value to add and subtract decimals?
CHAPTER 5 MATH TEST, FRIDAY OCTOBER 13th
Scientist's Corner
This week as Scientists we continued to discuss the difference between constructive and destructive forces and how both forces have an effect on Earth's landforms. Next week we will investigate watersheds. We will even get to engage in two water labs with our Resident Scientist Mrs. Umberger. Throughout our Unit of Study we will continue to realize the impact that humans have on oceans and landforms throughout our world.
Questions to Ask Students During Discussions about Science
- What are continental landforms and how are they formed?
- What happens when water flows over earth materials?
- What is weathering, erosion, and deposition?
Science Standards
- Indicator: 5.E.3B.1 Analyze and interpret data to describe and predict how natural processes (such as weathering, erosion, deposition, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, or storms) affect Earth’s surface.
- Indicator: 5.E.3A.1 Construct explanations of how different landforms and surface features result from the location and movement of water on Earth’s surface through watersheds (drainage basins) and rivers.
We also are beginning our Science Fair Unit of Study. This week students found out who would be in there groups. Next week, they are responsible for brainstorming potential topics and researching those topics. I'm very excited about the ideas students are already talking about!!
Historian's Corner
This week we began our Westward Expansion Unit of Study. We started by reading two different stories which gave us different perspectives of Westward Expansion. Next week, we will focus on obstacles that individuals faced while traveling and settling in the West.
- 5-2.1 Analyze the geographic and economic factors that influenced westward expansion and the ways that these factors affected travel and settlement, including physical features of the land; the climate and natural resources; and land ownership and other economic opportunities.
- 5-2.2 Summarize how technologies (such as railroads, the steel plow and barbed wire), federal policies (such as subsidies for the railroads and the Homestead Act), and access to natural resources affected the development of the West.
- 5-2.3 Identify examples of conflict and cooperation between occupational and ethnic groups in the West, including miners, farmers, ranchers, cowboys, Mexican and African Americans, and European and Asian immigrants.
- 5-2.4 Explain the social and economic effects of westward expansion on Native Americans; including opposing views on land ownership, Native American displacement, the impact of the railroad on the culture of the Plains Indians, armed conflict, and changes in federal policy.
