On the move with Coach Horn and Coach Schuette
Happy Spring Break and NCAA basketball month! We have just finished up speed stacking. In March we will be doing some bowling, more fitness testing and beginning some outdoor games. We will also be focusing on the amount of daily activity that our bodies need. Students will continue working hard on our flexibility and muscular strength in order to raise our physical fitness scores. Lastly, we will be reviewing the bones and muscles for each grade as well. Keep Moving!
PE SHOES: Sandals, boots, or crocks are not safe to be used in the gym where we are running and playing a majority of the time. Please have a set of PE shoes for them to change into. Kinder/1st grade - Velcro is MUCH appreciated. THANK YOU!
From the Counselors
The goal of student placement is to design balanced classes, according to established criteria, which create the optimal learning environment for all Maize Elementary School students. Each classroom is a small community that must be representative of the diverse social, academic, and physical needs and abilities of all students. If you have any concerns about your child’s class placement for next year, please visit with us.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We start working on class placements this month.
Our lessons this month are about working together and showing cooperation.

Nurses Corner
Nurse’s Corner:
Hello Panther families, first of all thank you all so much to those of you that so kindly donated Kleenex
and Clorox wipes to my office. I appreciate it more than you all know. This is why MES is the BEST.
I do have another small ask if anyone is willing to contribute. The nurse’s office is in need of some
clothing items. They can be new or used, but preferably if used in good condition without holes or
stains. Some items we are needing are:
BOYS: GIRLS:
Size 5-7 sweatpants/athletic pants and/or shorts Size 4-6x and 8-10 leggings or sweatpants
Size 8 underwear Size 6-8 t-shirts or long sleeves
Size S/M socks Size S/M socks
On another noted…. With Spring right around the corner it’s a good time to start thinking about how to
get active. Exercising frequently is a great thing for everyone to be doing, including your children. This
is a great time of year to help your child find ways to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
BENEFITS OF EXERCISE:
Just like with adults, regular exercise is extremely beneficial for children. Some of these benefits
include:
Maintaining a healthy body weight
Prevention of diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes
Reduced stress levels
How much exercise does your child need?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children should get a minimum of 1 hour of
physical activity per day.
HOW TO MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE:
Limit time spent playing video games or watching TV (electronic use)
Find activities that you can enjoy as a family such as taking walks or riding bikes around your
neighborhood
If indoors, you can use YouTube videos that lead children in an exercise program.

Music Notes
It’s always a good day to make music. If the sun is shining you might even catch us making music outside as the weather warms up! We love to get fresh air and use our circle drive as an outdoor music classroom.
We’re also gearing up for another round of artist interviews! Laura Doherty, Jessie Jukebox, Joanie Leeds, and Elliott Park are having songs featured in the upcoming 1st grade program on May 4th. Look them up on whatever streaming service you use to hear some great music for kids and families!
I attended the Kansas Music Educators Association In-service Workshop at the end of February and was able to teach a group of 1st graders as part of a model teaching opportunity for new music teachers and college students! The kids did a great job as they were watch my 100 adults who attended the session. I also got to meet Quaver, our curriculum creator and music educator extraordinaire! It was a great conference.
Be on the lookout for more details about the 1st grade music program before spring break!
