Meet our Administrators
Chris Farabee, Principal
Chris Farabee, Principal
I am honored to be able to serve this community as the Principal of Combs High School. I have lived and worked in the East Valley since 1978. I have worked on a high school as a teacher and coach since 1990, 17 of those years as a public school administrator. Most recently, spending the last 14 years as the Assistant Principal and Principal of Hamilton High School in Chandler. We have a supportive community, with great teachers and coaches on our campus and I look forward to an amazing year for our students and families.
Scott Sheldon, Assistant Principal
My name is Scott Sheldon and I am the Assistant Principal that works with 11th and 12th grade students. I grew up in North Dakota and met my wife, Michelle of 35 years in college at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. Both my wife and I taught in Yuma AZ for 7 years. We left Yuma when I accepted my first administrative job in Kansas. I was a principal in a small school for 5 years then moved to a large school as an Assistant Principal/AD. I was in that position for 6 years, then was promoted to the principal position. I was the building principal for 12 years at Emporia High School. My wife and I decided to move back to AZ where I was an HR Director prior to coming to Combs. Michelle is an Elementary School counselor in Queen Creek. I wanted to get back into HS Administration, and we accepted positions here in the Combs School District last spring. I am very excited to be here and look forward to getting to know you.
I am the proud father of 2. My daughter Kyla is a Physician Assistant in Denver, CO (and getting married in May), my son Brock is in Business Administration also in Denver, CO. They attended Baker University (Kyla) in Baldwin City KS, and Kansas University aka KU (Brock).
Scot Schmidt, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director
I appreciate the opportunity to serve as assistant principal, athletic & activities director of Combs High School for the past 2 years. Over the past 33 years, 15 of those in Wyoming, 4 at Higley High, 12 at Mesa High and currently at Combs High, I have successfully filled a number of roles and job responsibilities within the field of education. These include teaching science, computer, health and vocational agriculture, coach, instructional specialist, team leader, and assistant principal in the areas of both activities and athletics. In all of these positions I feel that I have motivated, inspired, challenged and led individuals to succeed at higher levels. Being a part of the educational process has been gratifying as well as rewarding. I continue to look forward to new challenges and growth opportunities in the future.
Susan Dorinski, Teacher on Special Assignment/Attendance and Discipline

CogAT
The J.O. Combs Unified School District is committed to identifying students who qualify for placement in the gifted cluster classroom. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is the assessment used to determine whether a child qualifies as gifted. If your child is already identified as gifted there is no need to have them retested. Additionally, all 3rd grade students will be screened for further gifted testing in the spring.
If you would like your child to be evaluated for gifted the Fall testing for grades Kindergarten - 6th grade will occur at Combs Traditional Academy beginning at 9:00AM on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Parents may check in for testing in the school’s library beginning at 8:30AM, where they will be able to wait for their child. The testing session will last approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours, so please plan accordingly.
To learn more about the gifted student and to complete the permission to test form please visit the Curriculum & Instruction department on our district website at www.jocombs.org. The permission to test form must be submitted by Wednesday, September 19, 2018.
