In early December, the Salmon Creek Elementary School Robotics club competed in the First® Lego® League Challenge against 12 other teams. They received first-place recognition for their innovation project entry where students identified a renewable energy problem and created a solution.

The Salmon Creek team focused on the importance of bats to our ecosystem and they developed a wind turbine perimeter system including motion detectors, thermal detectors, and a cinnamon scent sprayer that deters bats from flying near the wind turbine. There was significant interest in the cinnamon scent solution by a senior wildlife specialist at PGE, and the idea may be adopted by the energy company. Congratulations, team!

A principios de diciembre, el Club de Robótica de la Escuela Primaria Salmon Creek compitió en “First® Lego® League Challenge” contra otros 12 equipos. El equipo de Salmon Creek se enfocó en la importancia de los murciélagos en nuestro sistema ecológico y desarrollaron un sistema de perímetro para turbina eólica (activada por el viento) que incluía detectores de moción, detectores termales y un rociador de aroma de canela que disuade a los murciélagos de volar cerca de la turbina eólica. Hubo un interés significativo en la solución del aroma de canela por parte de un especialista de vida silvestre de la compañía de electricidad PGE, y puede que la idea sea adoptada por la compañía de energía. ¡Felicidades al equipo!

В начале декабря команда клуба роботехники из начальной школы Salmon Creek участвовала в соревнованиях First® Lego® League Challenge с другими 12 командами. Команда получила первое место за свой инновационный проект, ученики идентифицировали проблему в области возобновляемой энергии и разработали решение поставленной задачи.

Команда школы Salmon Creek сосредоточила своё внимание на важной роли летучих мышей в нашей экосистеме и разработала систему ветровой турбины, включая детекторы движения, тепловые датчики и распылитель запаха корицы, который отпугивает летучих мышей, что не даёт им подлетать близко к ветровой турбине. Поздравляем команду!

Lily Strickland, a 5th-grade student and class president at Hough Elementary School, wanted to give back to the hospital and medical team that saved her life when she was an infant. This holiday season, she organized a toy drive and fundraiser for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, with the goal of raising $2,000. Her outreach and efforts were so successful that she exceeded her goal, raising $2,353.74! In addition, on December 17, she was able to deliver a full truckload of toys to the children’s hospital.

"I really enjoyed being able to help the kids," Lily said. "They deserve the joy of Christmas. I'm thankful for everyone who supported me throughout the process."

Lily rallied her community to participate in the cause, with several local toy stores and children’s stores offering donations. She also received tremendous support from the Hough Elementary School community. Congratulations, Lily!

Campaña de donación y de juguetes para el Hospital Infantil de Doernbecher

Lily Strickland, una estudiante del 5º grado y presidenta de la clase de su grado en la Escuela Primaria Hough, quería demostrar su agradecimiento al hospital y equipo médico que le salvó la vida cuando era un bebé.
