Academics

Math- This week we will classify polygons based on their sides and angles. We will then investigate symmetry. We'll spend two days in class reviewing Chapter 8, and then I plan to give the test on Friday. As usual, I'll send home a study guide.

Writing - We will continue publishing our State Research Reports. I hope to have time for students to present their reports to the class too. This will depend on how long the M-STEP takes.

Science - We continue our investigations with electricity this week. Students will learn about conductors and insulators. We will play a game called "Mystery Circuits" in which students have to build a circuit, draw a schematic diagram, and identify hidden connection on a mystery board. We will then begin understanding series and parallel circuits.

Social Studies -This week we will put social studies on the back burner as we continue with our science unit.

Reading- Our work in the Historical Fiction is coming to a close. As a final activity in this unit, students will be working with their groups to decide how they want to "celebrate" the end of the unit. Students will consider the historical period of their novel, and design their own activity. (Write letters to soldiers, act out a scene in the book, etc.) The timing of this "celebration" will depend on the M-STEP... and may have to be put on hold until the test is completed.

Teacher Notes

A HUGE "THANK YOU"

You guys really know how to make a teacher fill loved and appreciated! Thank you for the kind words last week, school supplies, lunch, dressing your students like a sunset, and the very generous gift card to the spa! It was a week of paradise at Northwood! This group of kids hold a very special place in my heart, and I'm not looking forward to saying good-bye to them in a couple months. Thank you for all your efforts to make last week awesome, but I especially thank you for sending me your children everyday, ready to learn!

M-STEP

The 4th grade window for taking the M-STEP begins May 10th. Students will take the Language (reading and writing) and Science portions this week. We will be taking the tests after lunch, so if you could avoid any appointments in the afternoon, it would be appreciated!

Wearing the Wild

RUNS 5/2 - 5/13

Help Northwood choose the animal to adopt at the Detroit Zoo. Make your selection by Friday, May 13th so we can tally the results and make our donation to the Zoo.

Choose the animal you want Northwood to adopt at the Detroit Zoo. After you make your selection, send in $1 (or more if you wish) to school to help support the animal you have chosen. We invite you to wear an animal print on MAY 13!
