A Note from the Heads
Dear Parents and Staff,
Can you believe that it is May today? The months are flying by and each day is a treasure. It's the same with children. The years go by quickly, but sometimes the days are very long. Treasure each moment as kids grow up very fast!
See later in this newsletter about our Family Picnic on Sun., May 21, 1:00 - 4:00 pm. It's a time to celebrate our 50 years and a time to have fun. Parents, students and extended family are invited. If you know someone who wants to find out more about the school, invite them, too! There will be a SignUp Genius out later this week.
May 20th is the Golf Outing. See later in this newsletter for a link to sign up yourself or a foursome. We'll need some parents to help staff the event. You also may sign up to just attend the dinner after the golf.
Ready! Set! Have a great week!
Warm regards,
Elaine Kennedy, Head of School & Pauline Nagle, Associate Head of School

Hello and welcome to 🌻May🌷 Preschool families and friends!
We are so excited for our upcoming field trip, this Wednesday, to the Hands-On Museum in Ann Arbor… it lends perfect timing to be all hands-on this week with “Handy” art where we will be creating with finger paints and testing our skills at hand tracing. Discovery will host “Handy” math, we will roll, count, and cover using fun hand shape counters. We’ll have a handy-dandy time with play dough at our sensory tables as well.
Our “Teachers of the Week” for the letter ‘Vv’, this week, are Chimamanda and Patrick for Marisa’s room and Olivia and Kathryn for Danielle’s room.
Our very own Jackson Escobar celebrates his birthday this month.
*Reminders:
•🤲🏼 This Wednesday, May 3, 2023 we will meet at the Hands-On Museum in Ann Arbor, where we will spend time exploring and feeding our curiosities. There is a fee for parking and map will be included. You can leave for lunch and return if you like! 👍🏽
•Our guinea pig girls are still available for summer vacay stays. Check in with Marisa or Danielle if you are interested in hosting them for some summer fun times!
☀️Here’s to a fantastic week together☀️

Dear Parents,
Ocean learning continues. The kids can't get enough of learning about all the ocean creatures. We explored Tide pools, discussing low and high tide as well as all of the interesting animals that live there. Last week each child chose a sea animal they would like to know more about and we are creating a class book! Order forms for a hard-cover copy of our class book will be sent home in Friday folders this week. Please return orders on Monday.
During this last month of school, each child is working at their own individual reading level. Some students are solidifying their sounds and early sight words, others are moving into phonics readers and still others are exploring chapter books and story elements. It's an exciting time in K-1 to be a reader!
For writing, we are learning our heart words and practicing how to identify the parts that we can hear and the part we need learn by heart. We're also writing our ocean animal fact page for our books and enjoying journal.
In math, we have been very focused on number sense, and now we are learning how to create number sentences for word problems. Showing our thinking in a written math equation can be a challenge, but everyone is doing a great job learning how to put their math thinking on paper.
We are planning a field trip to the Toledo Zoo with the Elementary Class on June 6th. We need 4 drivers/chaperones that can drive 3 children. This will be a full day field trip. Please send me an email if you would like to drive and chaperone. You must have a driver's release form filled out (from enrollment). Permission slips will go home in Friday folders.
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Ms. Pauline

End of the Year Performance
We are excited to announce that we will be having an end of the year performance/variety show. Our class will be singing one song together. If your child would like to perform a talent, please help them come up with a plan to practice and prepare. If they want to be in a group, they will need to coordinate with each other.
Oregon Trail
The students have been put into their families and given roles and family names for their trip. Next week they will decide what to take on the trip, start sewing a buckskin sack and they will be introduced to the classic “Oregon Trail” game. They will also be asked to select a Wagon Master. It is going to be a busy week!
Reading Groups
We are in the juicy parts of our books. They are really getting good. Our discussions are a lot of fun and the kids are very insightful. We are practicing accountability. We read together in groups and there are assignments each week that they need to complete on their own. We have talked about the importance of being prepared for a group. It is great to see them take responsibility for their work. There will be a quiz at the end of May on their book. They will be able to use their novel study packet on the quiz so making sure that it is filled out will really help them. We are talking a lot about using textual evidence or examples to show what they know.
The independent work that students are working on is reading about the Oregon Trail, people who helped us discover land, and things that pioneers experienced. This is helping our students get into the trip we are about to take in May.
Writing Groups
We have had a fabulous week kicking off the Oregon Trail. We started journaling about the positive and negative aspects about moving from one place to another, whether it’s moving to a new house or new school. Then they journaled about their Oregon Trail characters, thinking about where they were from and what life was like for them. I was impressed with how the scholars really got into character! They thought about hobbies, challenges, pets, and even wardrobes!
Next week, the goal will be to persuade someone to go on the Oregon Trail. We’ll be using our persuasive writing skills, making sure to organize our ideas in a way that flows. Some groups will be typing these in essay format, while others will write a paragraph.
Math Groups
The Math Fun Fair was a huge success! Everyone was able to attend having completed the activities in the classroom and at home. A round of applause goes out to Alicia Marouf for providing the Connect 4 and Jenga, as well as the caramel corn and cotton candy! Thank you so much! It added a lot to the festivities! Thanks for our middle school helpers, Zoe and Aili! You are the Best!
This week in Math we will be exploring:
Fortnite Kittens - symmetry and measuring in cups, quarts and pints
Pug Puppies - we will work with area in irregular rectangles and then they will discover how to measure a circle.
Bagels - we will do some more work on averages then we will explore angles.
Floppa Blades and Cactus Clan - we will review fraction vocabulary and start working on angles.

Hello Middle School Parents!
Can you believe it's May already? Hoping to see more May flowers soon and some warmer weather!
We have a busy and exciting week ahead as all students are looking forward to the release of the salmon on Wednesday. Looks like we'll dodge the rain on that day.
In Language Arts, Groups B and C did well on their Outsiders Assessment on Friday. Students will watch the movie version on Monday, write a short essay in response to the movie, and then finish the week with a creative poster assignment that will incorporate the novel's themes, conflicts, symbols, settings, motifs, etc.
Language Arts Group A will finish answering comprehension questions about Chapter 16 of Kira Kira, complete assessment questions over the entire novel, and then write a short essay about the theme of the novel.
All students will take individualized spelling and vocabulary tests on Vocabclass.com on Friday.
In Social Studies, students will finish studying the implications of the Columbian Exchange, and then prepare to study the Transatlantic Slave Trade next week.
In Math, Group A will describe a pattern that can be expressed using repeated multiplication and generate numerical expressions with whole number exponents. Students will also interpret expressions with exponents larger than 3 and use the phrase “to the power of”. Finally, students will justify whether expressions with exponents are equal.
Group B will use different methods to solve equations (the distributive property or simplifying each side of the equation) and justify their reasoning for choosing a specific method. Students will also decide between drawing a tape diagram, writing an equation, or using reasoning to solve story problems. In addition, students will work with inequalities to represent them on a number line and supply numbers for the variable to make the inequality true.
Group C will use scientific notation to describe large and small numbers. Students will multiply and divide with scientific notation to answer real-world questions and use scientific notation and estimation to compare numbers. Students will also add and subtract using scientific notation and interpret the results.
Just a reminder that our 8th-grade students have been assigned a final project to complete and present on the night of 8th-grade Graduation, which will take place at the PARC on the night of June 7th. 8th graders must complete a Retrospective Google slide show to highlight their family and school journey. Please share with your 8th graders pertinent family and school pictures that they can upload to their slideshows. Additionally, 8th graders will complete a Vision Board that focuses on what they've accomplished in their 8th-grade year and what they envision about their plans for the future. Students were given this assignment via Google Classroom, and it must be turned in to Ms. Linda for review no later than Monday, May 22nd. Please contact Ms. Linda if you have any questions/concerns about this Project.
Also, 8th graders and other interested parents, make sure to mark your calendar for the morning of Thursday, June 1st when 8th Graders will represent their Museum Projects, their Portfolios, as well as the findings of their Career Exploration. We look forward to these presentations!
Finally, we also want you to think about whether or not you would like to schedule a year-end Conference for your child. We would like to schedule conferences either before or after school during the days of June 1, 2, 5, 6, or 7. The morning of June 5th has already been scheduled. Please let us know your preferences.
Enjoy your week!
Ms. Linda and Ms. Nicole
