Dear Sanborn Families,
We are very excited to welcome your children back to school this week! We hope you are able to join us for Meet the Teacher on Tuesday, August 16, from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for all families to come to school and drop off school supplies, meet their child's teacher, and walk around the building! The first day of school for grades 1-6 is Wednesday, August 17 (half day with dismissal at 11:25 a.m.). The first day for ECDEC and Kindergarten is Thursday, August 18.
The Sanborn Staff is here to work together with you, and if there is anything you need, please let us know. We look forward to a wonderful school year!

Breakfast and Lunch Program at Sanborn
Both breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students at Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School who would like to eat the food served each day. Students at GMS are offered FREE breakfast daily starting the first day of school as part of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program, funded by the federal government. Lunch service begins on Thursday, August 17 for ECDEC, Bilingual Kindergarten, and students in grades 1-6. Students may bring a lunch from home if they prefer to do so.
What does this mean for families attending the CEP school like Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School?
Again, all enrolled students will receive a free breakfast and lunch at school at no charge to your household. Your child(ren) will be able to participate without having to pay a fee, but we ask that you still complete the Fee Waiver form here (Spanish form) to determine if your family qualifies for other financial assistance such as school fees, athletic, and activity fee waivers. Again, completing the application is still necessary for other programs and assists with funding for educational programs in District 15.
Information from our Nutritional Services Department may be found HERE for your review.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures at Sanborn
Students are expected to arrive between 8:10 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. Supervision for students begins at 8:10 a.m.
Please do not park in the front circle drive at any time during the school day. Please be considerate when arriving to pick up and drop off your child. Please park your vehicle in the designated parking spaces only.
The front circle is a FIRE LANE. Vehicles may not be stopped or parked in the front circle at any time. The parent drop off and pick up location is off of Wood Street by the northeast entrance to the school. Parents should wait in the car pickup line stretching from the northeast school doors near the gym into the Palatine Park District parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation in getting all of our children to school safely.
We have two locations where students enter the building on a daily basis. Car riders enter through Door 8 on the side of the school facing Wood Street. Mrs. Arenberg and/or a Program Assistant are stationed there as supervisors. Walkers or bus riders will enter through Door 1 at the front of the school. Mrs. Costa, our Assistant Principal, is often stationed at the front as a supervisor with another staff member.
All students who ride the school bus home from school will exit Door 1 to board their buses. Our classroom teachers walk their classes to their designated bus and ensure that all students board the correct bus each day.
Students who are walking home will exit out of Door 1, as well. They have to walk along the sidewalk to their destinations. If they rode a bicycle to school, they must walk their bike when on school property. Once they have left school property, they can resume riding their bicycle home.
Students who are car riders should go to Door 8 for parent pick-up. This is where we have staff available to supervise their dismissal and safe entrance to their car. We have heard from the Palatine Park District that students are not using the designated cross walk areas on Wood Street. There have been a few noted issues of kids dodging moving cars to go to their family's car. We appreciate your help keeping our kids safe by following these guidelines.
Walking to School/Crossing Guards: Crossing guards are stationed at the corner of Colfax and Benton Streets in the morning and again in the afternoon to assist children walking to and from school.

Required Health, Immunization, Dental, and Eye Exams:
In order to safeguard the health of children, District 15 enforces Illinois student health requirements. These requirements consist of health, dental, and eye exams and immunizations specific to grade and age.
HEALTH EXAMS are required for students entering preschool, kindergarten, sixth grade, and those who are new to the school.
According to Board of Education Policy 7:100 Health, Eye, and Dental Examinations, Immunizations, and Exclusion of Students and Illinois School Code, students who do not provide proof of receiving the required immunization and/or exam are excluded from school on October 15. Students new to Illinois schools, who register midterm, are allowed 30 days following registration to comply with the health requirements.
DENTAL EXAMS are required for students in kindergarten, second grade, and sixth grade. The dental examination must have taken place within 18 months prior to May 15 of the school year. A dental provider will schedule visits during the school year. If you would like your child to participate, please reach out to your school nurse. All students in the required grades are required to have either an exam or a dental waiver in their health record. A dental waiver form is available in the case of an undue burden or lack of access to a dentist. The IDPH Dental Examination form (English/Spanish) and the waiver form are available here and in the school office. If a student fails to present proof of a dental exam or a waiver form by May 15, the school may withhold the student's report card until the student presents proof: (1) of a completed dental exam, or (2) that a dental exam will take place within 60 days after May 15.
EYE EXAMS are required for students entering kindergarten and entering Illinois schools for the first time. A waiver form is available in the case of an undue burden or lack of access to an optometrist or to a physician who performs eye examinations. The State of Illinois Eye Examination Report and waiver form are available here and in the school office. If a student fails to present proof of an eye exam or waiver form by October 15, the school may withhold the student's report card until the student presents proof: (1) of a completed eye exam, or (2) that an eye exam will take place within 60 days after October 15.
